FIT faces Rollins in semifinal round of SSC Tournament on Friday at 4 p.m.
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (12-3, 3-2 SSC) enters the Sunshine State Conference Tournament on Friday after experiencing its most productive season in program history. The No. 13 nationally ranked Panthers claimed the two seed in the conference championship and will battle the three seed Rollins College Tars (6-8, 2-3 SSC) at 4 p.m. at Naimoli Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
FIT is coming off a difficult loss to No. 9 Tampa in the Panthers’ regular season finale on Friday, April 17. It was a back-and-forth game throughout, and the Spartans were able to pull away late to walk away with the 10-8 victory. The win gave Tampa the SSC regular season title, the No. 1 seed in the SSC Tournament and the right to host the SSC Tournament this weekend.
This semifinal battle between Florida Tech and Rollins is a rematch from the team’s earlier contest this season, in which the No. 12 Panthers were upset 9-6 at home on March 28.
Zach Wynne dished out a season-high five assists, and sophomore Charlie Morrisette had three goals in the loss to the Tars. Sophomore faceoff specialist Travis Wunder dominated the X, winning 14-of-19 attempts for the Panthers.
A major key to Rollins’ victory was the exceptional play of its goaltender, Jake Hogan, who recorded 19 saves in the game. Jack Vonarb and Carson Buell, the Tars’ two leading scorers this season, each tallied two goals against the Panthers. Vonarb leads Rollins with a team-leading 24 goals, while Buell has dished out a team-high 16 assists.
Following the matchup between FIT and Rollins, No. 1 seed Tampa will face No. 4 Lynn at 8 p.m. The winner of the two semifinal rounds will meet in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
