FIT Women: No. 4 Seed Panthers Face Off with Top-Seeded Mocs

(Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (7-8, 1-3 SSC) has been impressive its first-year as a program, and now the team has claimed a spot in the inaugural Sunshine State Conference Tournament on Friday. The Panthers enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 Florida Southern (18-2, 4-0 SSC) at 6 p.m. at Bryant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida. FlT played Saint Leo on Wednesday in a matchup that determined who would clinch the No. 3 seed in the SSC Tournament. The Lions defeated the Panthers 13-11 in a hard fought game in which the two teams were called for a combined 70 fouls. With the win, Saint Leo claimed the No. 3 seed and the chance to play No. 2 Rollins College in the first semifinal game at 3 p.m. This will be the Florida Tech’s second contest against No. 5 nationally-ranked Florida Southern in less than a week. The Mocs jumped out to a large lead in the first half and cruised to a 19-4 victory on Saturday, April 18. The win gave Florida Southern the SSC regular season title, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and the right to host. Freshmen Sara Grenier, Caroline Dunleavy and Allie Wood and sophomore Heather Roache each scored one goal for FIT in the loss. Freshman goaltender Stephanie Stuart recorded 10 saves while playing just one half for the Panthers. The Mocs were led by Caitlin Chase’s four goals and two assists and Shannon Gilfedder’s two goals and three assists.
