thanks to Travis Larner, Athletic Communications Assistant – Florida Southern College for this press release   LAKELAND – No. 5 Florida Southern will look to continue its dominance inside the Sunshine State Conference at the first-ever SSC Tournament this weekend, beginning with the semifinal round on Friday, April 24. The top-seeded Moccasins will host Florida Tech for a rematch of their regular-season finale at 6 p.m. at Bryant Stadium. In the first semifinal game at 3 p.m. on Friday, Rollins will battle Saint Leo for the right to advance to Sunday’s title game. The Mocs finished the regular season with an 18-2 record. Not only did they establish a new program record for wins in a season, but they swept their four SSC opponents along the way. They did so by a combined score of 67-22. Their only two losses on the season came to the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Adelphi and No. 3 Lindenwood (Mo.) by a mere three goals combined. Statistically, the Mocs are third in the nation in offense with 15.90 goals per game. On the other side of the ball, they are ninth, allowing only 7.40 goals per. The defensive unit leads the country with 13.30 caused turnovers per game as well. Individually, the team’s four returning All-American selections from a year ago have continued to pave the road of success in 2015. The senior Big Three of attack Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and midfielders Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.) and Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.) represent the highest-scoring trio in the country. Chase is second in points (88) and third in assists (54); Asper ranks fifth in points (84) and third in goals (61; Hoover is eighth with 79 points. Head coach Kara Reber knew Gabby Barowski would lead the defense; the Alexandria, Va., native is 10th in Division II with 2.15 caused turnovers per game and ninth in the conference with 2.25 ground balls. However, the performance of redshirt freshman Ashley Seborowski in the net has been a pleasant surprise. Former Division II Goalkeeper of the Year Katie Hammerer graduated last spring, leaving the position as the Mocs’ biggest question mark heading into the 2015 season. But Seborowski has kept the tradition of strong goaltending at FSC alive. In fact, her numbers are slightly better. Hammerer holds the current records for lowest goals-against average at 8.92 and highest save percentage at .515, but Seborowski boasts a 6.81 goals-against average and a .559 save percentage, ranking seventh and second in Division II, respectively. This after starting the season third on the goalkeeping depth chart. In the April 18 regular-season finale in Melbourne, the Mocs defeated the Panthers 19-4. Chase paced the offensive with four goals and six points; Barowski did so on the backend with four caused turnovers. Perhaps more impressive was that Florida Tech’s leading goal scorers, Sara Grenier and Allie Modica, who ranked second and third in the SSC in goals per game with 3.80 and 3.20, respectively, were held to one goal on eight shots combined. Reber’s Moccasins will look to repeat that performance and advance to the inaugural SSC Tournament Championship Game on Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. The other semifinal between No. 11 Rollins and Saint Leo will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Tars will try to duplicate the effort used to down the Lions 14-5 on April 3. In that game, the second-leading goal scorer in the country, Rollins junior Tyler Thomas, scored a game-high five goals. Saint Leo senior goalie Brittany Millsap surrendered 13 of the 14 goals in the first half, but the Tars only scored once on 16 shots against sophomore Kaylyn Kearns in the second half.
