BOCA RATON, Fla.- It was an uphill battle for the Lynn University lacrosse team all season. In just its second season in existence, the Fighting Knights have turned around the program and clinched the first post-season berth in school history.
After finishing 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the Sunshine State Conference in 2014, head coach Brian Kingsbury led his team to an 8-6 regular season record, including a 2-3 SSC slate. It came down to the wire as the Blue & White needed to top Saint Leo in the last game of the regular season to clinch a spot in the SSC Tournament.
Last Saturday night, as the rain came down over Malfitano Field at Bobby Campbell Stadium, the Fighting Knights did just that with a 12-10 victory over the Lions. Trailing 4-1 early in the first quarter, Lynn went on to score five unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead. SLU tied the game at seven-all midway through the third quarter but the Blue & White pushed through with four goals in the final period, including a unassisted goal by Austin Shircliff with 21 seconds left, that sealed the deal.
Lynn earned the fourth and final seed in the SSC Tournament and will face top-seeded Tampa (13-2) on Friday, April 24, at 8 pm. Last time the two teams met was April 11, when the #10 Spartans defeated Lynn 12-6. Austin Jerhoff and Mark Snellman both scored a pair of goals in the loss and Tampa was led by Mike Morris, who had the only hat trick of the game.
Yesterday, it was announced that Kingsbury had been named SSC Coach of the Year while Anthony Raninone and Shaun McDonald earned All-SSC Second Team Honors. Additionally, Caleb Cerf, Austin Jerhoff, Mark Snellman, Sam Turner and Jacob Van Leenen all earned All-Freshman Team accolades.
