13th-ranked Florida Tech continues home stand versus North Greenville on Friday at 7p.m. ET
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – With one game under its belt, No. 13 Florida Tech looks to move to 2-0 this season when it welcomes Conference Carolinas member North Greenville to Florida Tech Panther Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
The Panthers were pushed to the limit by a talented Young Harris squad in their season opener on Friday, however thanks to some fourth quarter heroics, including two goals by Cody Martin, FIT recaptured the lead late and held off the Mountain Lions 16-14.
Martin, a Howard Community College-transfer, netted his first career goal with 12:10 remaining in the fourth to bring the Panthers to within one. A couple of freshman then got into the mix. Tyler Covey tallied his first career goal to tie the game at 13 with less than 10 minutes left, and Logan Sweeney scored his first to give the Crimson and Gray the lead. Martin returned to the party at the 2:21 mark with his second goal which turned out to be the game winner for the Panthers.
Martin and Charlie Morrisette each finished with a game-high four points on two goals and two assists. Austen Zugelter registered a hat trick on just four shots and Brian Bacarella added two goals and one assist. Tom Filipow led FIT’s defense with three caused turnovers, and faceoff specialist Travis Wunder was stellar at the X winning 21-of-32 attempts.
Justin Ruiz began his Florida Tech career 1-0 but it was a shaky start for the freshman out of Holmdel, New Jersey. After getting off to a good start in the first quarter, he was peppered with 18 shots in the next two periods, allowing 10 goals in the process. However, with the game on the line, Ruiz came through in the clutch, stopping several late opportunities by Young Harris to help the Panthers hold on for the win.
Florida Tech faces a youthful opponent in North Greenville on Saturday. The second-year program features a 29-player roster, 20 of which are freshmen. Corey Struss, a 2010 graduate of Seton Hill, is the Crusaders’ first head coach, leading them to a 1-13 record in 2015. NGU first ever win came on March 7 of last season in a 16-13 victory over Lees-McRae.
Drew Wassenaar returns after leading his team in scoring in its inaugural season with 40 points on 30 goals and 10 assists. Roster turnover has plagued NGU in several areas, including the offense where the next top returning scorer for the Crusaders is Drew Warren who amassed nine points on seven goals and two assists.
Stephen Townes is the only returning player to take a faceoff for NGU last season, winning just 29 percent of his tries. There are two goalies on the roster, both freshmen in Matt Murphy and Matthew Sandoval.
Saturday’s game will also be the homecoming for Viera High School’s own Tyler Holland. A freshman, Holland plays midfield for the Crusaders.
J.C. Meyerholz will have the call from Florida Tech Panther Stadium. Fans can access live coverage of the Panthers’ home opener at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
