FIT Women: Florida Tech Hosts No. 4 New Haven for Monday Matchup

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – On Monday, Florida Tech (4-1) will be up against is toughest opponent yet when it squares off with 4th-ranked New Haven (2-1) at 7 p.m. ET at Florida Tech Panther Stadium.
Thanks to four goals and an assist by Sara Grenier in the first half of the Panthers’ most recent game against Young Harris on Friday, FIT was able to jump out to a 9-2 lead at halftime before cruising to a 16-9 win over the Mountain Lions.
Grenier added one goal and one assist in the second half to finish with seven points in the game, tying a career-high for the sophomore. Mary Gormley recorded two first half goals and notched three for the game to go along with one assist while Caroline Dunleavey had two goals and an assist to help FIT to its fourth victory of the season.
Monday’s contest will be the second meeting between New Haven and Florida Tech with the Chargers routing the Panthers 18-4 on March 16, 2015 in Melbourne. Allie Modica led Florida Tech with two goals and one assist and Grenier had two goals in the game.
HU’s Caitlin O’Brien finished as the top points-getter with seven on three goals and four assists in the first meeting while Corinne Fisher notched a game-high four goals to go along with one assist.
The Charger duo is back for New Haven this season and they are currently tied for the team-lead in points (9) with Jessica Mazliah.
Fisher has seven goals, two assists and a team-best 12 draw controls in 2016 while O’Brien and Mazliah boast identical stat lines of six goals and three assists. Hannah Johnson has collected a team-high seven ground balls in addition to nine draw controls.
New Haven returns to Florida Tech Panther Stadium after being handed its first loss of the season 7-5 at the hands of No. 5 LIU-Post on Saturday. The Chargers’ Nicole Belanger scored first in the game but the Pioneers answered with the four straight to take a 4-1 lead into the break.
NHU registered three of the first four goals of the second half, all off the crosse from Fisher, to make it a one score game with 16:07 to go. However, LIU-Post would close the contest tallying two of the next three, the final coming with 2:14 remaining, to shut the door on the Chargers.
