Tars Unable to Leash Bulldogs in 10-4 Loss Rollins Falls to Wingate as Tars Play Third Game in Five Days

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 12, 2016) – Playing their third game in five days, the Rollins College men’s lacrosse team found themselves unable to hold back a resolute Wingate squad, falling to the Bulldogs by a final score of 10-4 on Saturday morning at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field.
The loss drops the Tars to a record of 4-3, while the Bulldogs win their third straight to advance their mark to 3-4.
Adam Stefanowicz, Morgan Baker, Jack Vonarb and Justin Diamond each put a goal on the scoreboard on the day, with Rollins scoring three of their four goals in the second quarter.
In goal, Jake Hogan played a full 60 minutes, earning seven saves as he faced 41 shots and 17 shots on goal by the Bulldogs.
His counterpart, Jacob Ormerod, earned 12 saves on the afternoon, including six in the first quarter to keep the Tars off of the scoreboard.
Wingate was led by Daniel Godwin who scored three goals and two assists for five points on the afternoon. Alex Llerandi matched Godwin in goals with three, while Austin Murphy earned four points with two goals and two assisists. Kenan Reed tallied one goal and one assist, and Seth Grimwood matched Reed in points with two assists on the afternoon. Jeremy Sullivan rounded out the goal count with one of his own.
After 15 minutes of play, the Rollins found themselves trailing 2-0, but Baker opened up the second quarter with a goal in under a minute to put the Tars on the board. Stefanowicz ripped a shot from long range to even the game at 2-2 with 10:31 on the clock before the half, and a goal by Vonarb with 50 seconds on the clock gave Rollins a 3-2 lead. However, Wingate answered right back with a goal by Godwin with just five ticks on the clock to set the score at 3-3 at halftime.
The Bulldogs used a strong third quarter to add on four unanswered goals, including two from Godwin, leaving the Tars in a 7-3 deficit entering into the final quarter. Despite the Tars’ best efforts on attack, Rollins found themselves outscored by Wingate in the fourth quarter, 3-1, to close out the game with a final score of 10-4.
Rollins trailed in the shot count, 41-26, as well as in total ground balls, 26-22. The Tars were successful on 9-of-17 clear attempts, and won 8-of-18 faceoffs, all of which were taken by Trey LaPorta.
The Rollins men’s lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, March 16, when they host University of Indianapolis at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field.
