via press release   MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – After averaging 15 goals through its first three games of the season, Florida Tech was unable to unleash the same firepower against American International on Wednesday night. With the score tied late in the second half, a goal by Cheyenne Carden with 22 seconds remaining propelled the Yellow Jackets to the victory as the Panthers were handed their first loss of the season 10-9 at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. “We let a high emotional game get to us tonight,” head coachCorinne Desrosiers said. “It took us out of the game we like to play. We weren’t shooting the ball well and scored just two goals in the second half. I still think this team is capable of playing very good teams to the finish line. We just didn’t show it tonight. We beat ourselves and got complacent.” Sara Grenier, Sam Schiano and Mary Gormley netted two goals apiece in the defeat. Caroline Dunleavey added a goal and an assist while Allie Modica and Sarah Kapinos each scored one goal. Modica also collected a game-high five ground balls and Arielle Gunderson led all players with four caused turnovers. The Panthers fell behind 3-0 just 5:22 into the contest. Kapinos’ lone tally got FIT on the board, however it was quickly answered by Riley Brennan’s goal to make it a 4-1 advantage for AIC. Dunleavey found Schiano for the Panthers’ second goal igniting a 5-0 run by FIT to take a 6-4 advantage with 15:20 remaining in the half. Unfazed by the momentum, the Yellow Jackets closed the frame on a 3-1 spree, including two goals by Carden, to tie it up at 7-7 before the break. Stefanie Dufresne’s only goal of the contest gave AIC a 8-7 edge at the 22:39 mark of the second half. It would be answered by consecutive extra-man scores by Gormley to help FIT retake the lead with 11:56 remaining but those would end up being the last tallies of the game by the Panthers. The Yellow Jackets scored two more, including the game winner with 22 seconds left to shock Florida Tech at home. Carden paced AIC with five points on four goals and an assist in addition to hauling in a game-high nine draw controls. Brennan scored four goals on six shots and Dufresne and Whitney McKay each scored a goal and combined for five assists. FIT finished with more shots (24-20) and ground balls (25-22) however the Panthers did not make the most of their opportunities in the game, converting on just 1-of-7 free possession attempts. Florida Tech returns to action Friday, March 11 as the Panthers host Young Harris at 7 p.m. ET at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. FIT dominated the Mountain Lions last season, winning in a 20-8 rout on March 28, 2015 in Young Harris, Georgia.
