MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – Following an inaugural season that saw Florida Tech win seven games and clinch a spot in the first ever Sunshine State Conference Tournament, the Panthers are looking to make more of a splash in their second year starting with a rematch against Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
Head coach Corinne Desrosiers guides a youthful Panther squad that returns its top four scorers, its entire starting defense and goalie from the 2015 season, just to name a few. Overall, the 2016 roster features 11 returnees and eight newcomers, all freshmen.
Back for the Crimson and Gray is Sara Grenier who finished second in the SSC with 60 goals and third with 68 total points. The point total ties her with teammate Allie Modica who notched 51 points and 17 assists. Caroline Dunleavy led the Panthers with 18 assists last season to go along with 35 goals and Mary Gormley recorded 41 points form the midfield.
Gormley and Modica each collected a team-best 57 draw controls last season, good for third in the conference. Stephanie Stuart returns in goal for Florida Tech after leading the SSC with an 8.06 save per game average.
The Panthers are up against a Roberts Wesleyan team that defeated them 19-11 in the program’s first ever game a year ago. In that first meeting, the Redhawks jumped out to a quick 10-1 advantage just 13:01 into the contest. The rest of the way, however, went in FIT’s favor as it outscored RWC 10-9 the final 43 minutes.
Grenier scored five goals in her first collegiate game to lead the Panthers, recording the program’s first ever tally in the fourth minute of the first half. Modica finished with three goals, one assist and seven draw controls and Gormley notched two goals and an assist.
Cassley Jackowski registered 10 points in that first meeting, on eight goals and two assists while Loren Dunn posted five goals to go along with one assist. Maddi Chille and Ali Fox each scored two goals in the win.
All four Redhawks returned this season and have already picked up from where they left off, helping RWC crush Shorter in its season opener 21-10. Jackowski scored seven goals against the Hawks and Dunn added six goals on eight shots in addition to picking up seven groundballs. Chille and Fox combined for five points.
Desrosiers is excited to get another whack at the Redhawks to start the program’s second season.
“We’re all thrilled for this game tomorrow. We opened with them last year for our first game ever and they beat us by eight, even though numbers wise we were pretty even with them,” she stated. “It goes to show what some experience and leadership can get you at this level. This year we have a bit more of those qualities on this team and will be looking to our starters to get us on the board early and often.
“Roberts Wesleyan plays in a competitive New York-based conference and will definitely come out swinging, especially since they won big in Georgia Monday. They have two big players we will keep an eye on, the same two that got us last year, but hopefully we step out on the field tomorrow as a team and will force them to play as a team to beat us.”
J.C. Meyerholz will have the call from Florida Tech Panther Stadium. Fans can access live coverage of the Panthers’ home opener at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
