Third Quarter Runs Propels Fleming Island to Victory over Chiles
Devan Marquis scored four goals as Fleming Island pulled away in the second half for a 10-4 victory over visiting Tallahassee Chiles Friday night.
Marquis, a senior, scored the Golden Eagles’ only two goals of the first half as the hosts dominated play but went to the intermission with a 2-2 tie. The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 16-5 advantage in ground balls and outshot Chiles 24-8 in the first two quarters, but settled for long distance shots that were snared or blocked by Chiles goaltender Zeke Joyner, rather than driving to the goal or finding cutters near the crease.
In the second half, Fleming Island seemed determined to get quality shots, using their man behind the goal to find cutters or to take the ball to the crease himself. Sophomore Patrick Schreiber scored twice on wraparound drives from X as the hosts scored five goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Marquis punctuated the decisive sequence with a pivoting jump shot while running away from the goal. The Golden Eagles’ eight second half goals all came from within 10 yards of the net, most from the doorstep of the crease.
The Timberwolves’ Keaton Coates opened the scoring ten minutes into the game with a man-up goal off of a feed from Matt Ellison and led the Timberwolves with two goals. Dylan Ferry and Riley Hammer also tallied for Chiles. Joyner played well in the crease, saving 17 shots. Max Michaels won nine of 13 faceoffs while Jack Surgeoner scooped a game-high six ground balls to give the Golden Eagles a decided edge in possession time. Fleming Island improves to 4-3 and goes on the road for a date with Creekside on Tuesday, March 1. Chiles faces another stiff test Monday, February 29, when the Timberwolves host crosstown rival Tallahassee Maclay. Pictures by Ray DiMonda.
