By Michael Zima, Correspondent Senior Sam Barrington led 10 Golden Eagles scorers with five goals as Fleming Island ushered in the John Hawley era with a 20-0 victory over host Flagler Palm Coast Tuesday night. Hawley is replacing Jeff LaVangie, who went 33-14 in three years at as the Golden Eagles head coach before accepting an assistant coaching position at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia in the offseason. Hawley was a high school All-American lacrosse player and then a letterman at the U.S. Naval Academy. He has been an assistant coach at various times with the Golden Eagles, so is familiar with their personnel. Hawley has installed a new offensive philosophy based on teamwork and finding open cutters to the goal. “We would like to become more of a pass-oriented team, rather than relying on isolation,” explained Hawley. “I would like to see more passing before dodging.” Attack men Patrick Schreiber and Kirby Gracia had hat tricks Tuesday, while senior Will Yarbrough and freshman Daniel Horrell notched two goals apiece. Freshman Andrew Schreiber slipped a bounce shot past Bulldogs goalie Matthew Trecki late in the third quarter, becoming the third Schreiber family member to score in the game. Senior attack Danny Schreiber had beaten Trecki with a high corner shot in the first quarter. Danny Schreiber had the game’s prettiest assist when he threaded a pass from behind the goal to a closely covered Gracia, who quick sticked the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. Flagler Palm Coast trailed 13-0 at halftime and never threatened the Golden Eagles. Trecki was courageous in the crease, thwarting several close range opportunities and finishing with 10 saves. Bulldogs middie Corey Gales led all players with seven ground balls. Golden Eagles goalie Ryan Kelly saved the hosts’ only shot on goal, while the Fleming Island killed two penalties without allowing a shot. Freshman Max Michaels won seven of eight face offs for Fleming Island, including an unassisted romp to the goal. Newcomer Elijah Ramirez won five of eight face offs. The Golden Eagles go to Gainesville Buchholz for its next game Thursday night. Flagler Palm Coast also returns to action Thursday, traveling to Jacksonville Atlantic Coast.
