On a cold and rainy night in the Shark Tank, Ponte Vedra started the 2016 campaign with an impressive win against a tough Matanzas team 23-10.
Andrew O’Dare won the opening face off and the Sharks offense was off and running. PV came out firing with a well-balanced offense and scored with 7 different players (CD James, Jack Burke, Jude Kuhn, Marshall Few, Reid Smith, Matt Keeler and O’Dare) to take a 7-1 lead. The Pirates, led by Gunnar Parson and Andrew McIntire, fought back scoring 5 more goals before the half; but, PV’s Keeler added 3 of his own to take the score to 11-6.
Defensively, there was also a team aspect to the sharks play on the field. Wyatt Schupler directed the defense from the goal. Jacob Reeves and Hal Swan played tight defense and kept the pressure on the Pirates.
The second half scoring was lead by Smith who racked up 6 goals and 2 assists on the night. Keeler ended with 5 goals and 1 assist, James 2, Few 2g 1 a, and 4 more sharks scored including Devin Naidoo, Cord Bishop, Cole Celani and Freshman Devin Hoffman.
PV head coach Tom West commented, “I was pleased with the unselfishness and total team approach that our 2016 team has showed so far”.
Next up for the Sharks, Feb 10 @ Winter Park.
