FLN Weekly High School Media Poll (Well, This Writer Anyhow!) – 3/15/15
Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in Uncategorized.
We said last week would provide some likely changes in the poll and it came through:
Tuesday
Jensen Beach hosting Boca Raton – Boca Win
Oxbridge hosting Stoneman Douglas – Stoneman Win
Ponte Vedra hosting Bolles – PV Win
St. Thomas Aquinas hosting Benjamin – STA Win
Vero Beach hosting Martin County – Vero Win
Thursday
Lake Mary hosting Lake Brantley – Lake Mary Win
Saint Andrew’s hosting Boca Raton – SA Win
Friday
Jupiter hosting Ponte Vedra – Jupiter Win
Maclay hosting Nease – Maclay Win
St. Thomas Aquinas hosting Barron Collier – STA Win
Saturday
Gulliver Prep hosting Ponte Vedra – PV Win
Pope John Paul hosting Vero Beach – Vero Win
One of the biggest issues I face right now is the circular nature of the game results so far this year:
SA beats Jupiter, who beat Ponte Vedra and Stoneman
Vero beat SA but lost to Boca, who lost to SA and Pope
Stoneman beat SA but lost to Jupiter
But right now there is one easy pick and that is at the top as STA continues to roll with their dominant performance over Barron Collier. Lake Mary looms at home on Friday and the last regular season game is a road trip to Jupiter. Boca also visits Piccolo Field and those two played one of the most exciting overtime periods you will ever see last season before Boca pulled it out . . . so STA will be looking for payback this time.
Then we get to the rest of the Top 5 and that is where it really gets interesting.
Jupiter and SA are coming on strong. PV has only lost once, this week. Lake Mary has only lost once, to PV, last week. LHP is cruising along but played a couple of middle of the pack clubs last week and is looking at a tougher end of the season. Vero is really playing well and holds some really good wins. Stoneman completely took care of Oxbridge and has only loss. Barron Collier falls out of the Top 5 but hosts Jupiter next Saturday.
So basically . . . no matter how I list this someone will be saying ‘No Way’ . . .
Oh well, as the old saying goes . . . ‘if you can’t stand the heat . . . turn on the air conditioner’
After all Boca Raton bachelors don’t cook.
All right, I did make that one up . . . I do cook.
So, here we go . . . (still waiting for SOMEONE to give me a Monty Python opening line . . .) – if I bold it maybe someone will take me seriously. After all, it took a year for Daisy Jacobs to win the Vichyssoise challenge . . . it was delicious Daisy and I promise I’ll get the dish back to you before next year!
This Week’s Top 20
#1 – St. Thomas Aquinas
#2 – Lake Highland Prep
#3 – Jupiter
#4 – Stoneman Douglas
#5 – tie – Saint Andrew’s / Ponte Vedra
#7 – Lake Mary
#8 – Vero Beach
#9 – Barron Collier
#10 – Seminole
#11 – Maclay
#12 – Boca Raton
#13 – Jensen Beach
#14 – Benjamin
#15 – Buchholz
#16 – Newsome
#17 – Pope John Paul
#18 – Martin County
#19 – Oxbridge
#20 – Fleming Island
Also considered: Pine Crest, Columbus Catholic, Gulliver Prep, Bishop Moore, Tampa Jesuit, Nease, Saint Augustine, Oak Hall, Dr. Phillips, Cypress Bay
As you can see, I took the chicken way out for #5/6 but really when you look at it, #2 through #9 is really just a matter of slight differences. And Seminole is just a little further behind.
Instead of focusing on the Top 10 it would be interesting to focus on the next 10.
Maclay only really has one decent challenge left in Oak Hall and hasn’t gotten a real signature win so this is really all they can rise to and frankly I might have them a little high here based on their schedule.
Boca Raton was handled easily by SA Thursday but has some top wins over Jensen Beach and Vero. They did lose to PJP, which is the fastest riser this week as they have won 7 in a row until last night’s loss to Vero. Another team that is fast moving up, but not yet in the Top 20, is Pine Crest, with six straight wins. PJP and PC play the last game of the season too.
Of Jensen’s 4 losses, three were by one goal. The District 19 playoffs are going to be epic as once again 3 of the Top 18 teams in this week’s poll are from that district.
Benjamin has lost 4 of 6, to top ranked teams and travels to Virginia this week in an effort to escape the heat. Jupiter, Boca and Martin County are lurking when they get back so we will know a lot more soon enough.
It’s really a shame that Buchholz does not have a Top 10 opponent to really test how good they are but one thing that was great was if you watched the Mastro Subaru Play of the Week you saw that their crowd certainly is in to the season and we can chalk up another area that is going all in on the sport!
Newsome still remains undefeated but the schedule remains their biggest impediment to moving up.
Martin County pops back in . . . just in time for Jupiter coming to town on Tuesday. A great opportunity to show what they have.
Fleming Island remains a great 2015 story and this Saturday is another barometer game as they travel south to play Oxbridge. Oxbridge is in definite need of quality wins to prepare for the playoffs.
Cypress Bay falls out of the Top 20 with their loss to University School.
All of the teams in the Also Considered category are just on the cusp and many play each other and some Top 20 teams so movement in the bottom half is almost a given at this point, not a possibility!
This week there are some great games that will be important for next week’s poll:
Tuesday
Martin County – Jupiter
Pine Crest – Columbus Catholic
Vero Beach – St. Edwards
Wednesday
Boca Raton – Lake Mary
Gulliver Prep – Barron Collier
Lake Highland – Bishop Moore
Stoneman Douglas – Ransom Everglades
Thursday
Buchholz – Oak Hall
Friday
Columbus Catholic – Pope John Paul
St. Thomas Aquinas – Lake Mary
Saturday
Saint Andrew’s – Lake Highland
Barron Collier – Jupiter
Tampa Jesuit – South Fork
And, as always, get out to a game or two this week!
Or be like me and go to FIVE.
A special congratulations to Plantation High School for winning their very first game in program history last week, 5-4 over Immokalee!
