Florida – Hot Bed for Goalies?

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Your resident lax junkies at FloridaLacrosseNews.com have followed with interest the success of Florida goalies at the next level.  When we were pleased to report the commitments this week of Jupiter’s Viper Scheele to Bryant  http://fln.mattplu.com/2013/12/12/jupiter-high-school-2016-goalie-commits-to-bryant-university/ and Martin County’s Eric Simon to Delaware  http://fln.mattplu.com/2013/12/12/martin-county-high-school-2016-goalie-commits-to-delaware/ we started to think there was a story to be written.   For loyal FLN followers, the spring story by Lee Roggenburg about opposing starting D1 Florida goalies Chris Selva of Hofstra and Bernie Susskind of Dartmouth (shown above) was maybe the first real shout to let the lax world something was going on down here.  http://fln.mattplu.com/2013/03/27/a-florida-lacrosse-historical-moment/   Chris was recently named a pre-season honorable mention All-American as he enters his junior season.  Ponte Vedra’s Conor Peaks is expected to be Delaware’s starting goalie this year (and his younger brother Colin is stellar in the cage, too) http://fln.mattplu.com/2012/04/18/north-florida-names-all-americans-janine-brand-named-coach-of-the-year/ .  Nick Martin of Boca Raton is a freshman at Delaware http://fln.mattplu.com/2011/09/28/bocas-nick-martin-headed-to-delaware/ and reports are he had a good fall campaign.   Benjamin’s Anthony Cicio (FLN’s part time broadcasting intern), has one more year before enrolling at Manhattan http://fln.mattplu.com/2013/10/11/an-inside-look-anthony-cicio-of-the-benjamin-school/ .   How about this – another Boca Raton goalie, Bryan Lejeune,  was one of two goalies for the national team of France at the 2010 world games http://www.insidelacrosse.com/news/2010/06/29/international-french-national-team-roster-and-staff-fil-world-championships .   Ted DiSalvo from Spanish River is Washington College’s starter and last spring was twice named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week   http://washingtoncollegesports.com/sports/mlax/2012-13/releases/20130408mhnfiv .   The first Jupiter goalie to move to the next level was Stone Wharton  http://fln.mattplu.com/2012/11/02/saint-josephs-university-head-coach-taylor-wray-introduces-jupiters-stone-wharton-as-part-of-his-first-recruiting-class/ and FLN thinks maybe having an accomplished goalie as a head coach might be a sign of a pattern http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=792837 .   St. Andrew’s has a few other goalies of note:  Chris Kelly who is Detroit’s starting goalie, Corey Etcheverry  and senior Connor Poetzinger who is committed to Connecticut College http://fln.mattplu.com/2013/08/31/st-andrews-connor-poetzinger-to-connecticut-college/ .   Let’s not forget Lake Highland Prep’s Warren Berenis at Washington and Lee http://www.generalssports.com/sports/mlax/2012-13/bios/berenis_warren_ghtb and senior Adam Sawicki headed to Lehigh http://fln.mattplu.com/2012/12/06/lake-highland-preps-adam-sawicki-commits-to-lehigh/ .   Are you familiar with Justin Dougherty from Holy Trinity and the Coast Guard Academy http://mcla.us/player/26300/justin__dougherty/ or American Heritage keeper Marco Olortegui, a Marymount commit http://fln.mattplu.com/2013/10/05/elev8-goalie-marco-olortegui-commits-to-marymount-university/ ?   Finally, a little love goes out to Lighthouse Point resident Nolan Callahan who is in his final year at Avon Old Farms before enrolling at ‘Cuse  http://fln.mattplu.com/2012/08/27/2014-lighthouse-point-fl-native-commits-to-syracuse/ and Denver freshman Hunter Krout from Naples (Barron Collier and Hotchkiss) http://www.denverpioneers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=208810872 .   One theory of Florida’s success has it that as a relatively new area to the game, the goalies here had to learn to react to almost any shot because the offensive players here were inexperienced and not too predictable.  In essence, intentionally or not, we have been producing lax goalies who have acquired some hockey like skills (Nolan Callahan was a hockey goalie).  Add to that the thousands of reps they get with our good weather.  Maybe we’re onto something… There are many more to name, both in the past and in the future. As always, we welcome your recruiting information by using the following link:  http://fln.mattplu.com/submit-recruit-info/  We wish you all the best!
