Above – Coach Marty Ward felt his defense was a little underrated in 2014 – This group looked stout on Saturday Please check out our Gallery of Photos from the game here It may only have been an “unofficial” preseason scrimmage but is sure was fun to get out there and see some good live action college lacrosse.  The season opens for the Mocs in two weeks as they host Pfieffer on February 7th at 1:00.   The Eagles next event is a game at Lynn University on February 7th followed by games at USF and at Tampa on February 1st.  More info on the Eagles schedule is available here.

Mandarin High School’s Blake Weil had a huge day at the “X”
The two biggest things I took away from this game was that Blake Weill looked great at the F/O X.  His opponent, Tommy Twyford out of Cardinal Neman is no slouch.  He as a 70% F/O winner last season and is a 2x all conference player for the Eagles.  Weil was fast and handled the ball well once he got it. The second thing I took away was the Mocs attack is very good.  Coach Ward has got to be happy in returning his three starters.  Dane Sorensen, Cody Dwyer, and Grant VanOverbeke moved as a single unit, didn’t turn the ball over, and took high persentage shots.  I was unable to keep track of the number of times VanOverbeke put the ball in the net.  But if it wasn’t for some outstanding goalie play from Tyler Morrone he would have scored even more.  Zach Salazar, Tyler Tripoli, and Colin Bayer showed some good depth at the position for the Mocs.

Trennell Boggins is an elite level defender with big speed and can push transition
Defensivley, Trennell Boggins  is a speedster who can stretch the field for the Mocs on the clears as well as play shut down defense.  Freshman Dusten Peterson got the start on Saturday and looked solid.  Big 6’6″ Clinton Sorrell rounded out the starting defensive unit.  Lot’s of defenders got substantial time for the Mocs as we expect to see throughout the season.  Dominic Scarfo, Kyle Fortman, and Alex Dagan all played quite a bit on Saturday.  There is good competition at that spot for the Mocs. Brenden Mykle-Winkler from British Columbia is a solid workhorse down the middle for FSC.  Zee Wilson, Cody Gray, and Tyler Novak all looked solid at the midfield for the Mocs yesterday.

Wharton High School’s Chase Beale has good speed and is a smart playmaker
Florida Gulf Coast has some very talented players on that roster.  Danny Meyer from Jupiter Christian is a very good offensive midfielder who will score plenty of goals this season.  Sophomore Chase Beale from Wharton High School in Tampa played great and Gulf Coast High School’s own AJ Carter was flashing plenty of speed out there. Last season’s offensive MVP, Vinny Valentine, is a strong attackman who is going to give opponents some serious match up problems this season. It was a great and entertaining game from two Florida teams serious championship goals on their minds this season.  I suggest you get out there and watch either one of these teams play this season if you can.
