MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (4-2) overpowered NAIA No. 1 ranked Savannah College of Art & Design (4-1) on Saturday at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium. The Panthers controlled possession throughout the game and ran away with the 20-11 victory.
Sophomore Allie Modica and freshman Mary Gormley paced FIT with five goals and two assists apiece. Modica has now tallied five goals in three consecutive contests. Freshman Sara Grenier also registered five goals in the win.
“Having three kids put up five goals each is really great,” stated head coach Corinne Desrosiers. “We expect that from them all year. They have really good sticks and can consistently score.”
Freshman Caroline Dunleavy added three goals and one assist and fellow freshman Heather Molander recorded one goal and one assist. Graduate student Katie Reid scored the other goal for the Panthers.
“The girls played real well today, despite the heat on the field,” said Desrosiers. “The temperature definitely affected our play. We made a few mistakes throughout the game. Some can be attributed to how hot it was on the field, some was just sloppy play. They are all simple things that we can work on and improve for our game against New Haven.”
Molander put FIT on the board first, scooting by a defender and firing a shot past SCAD goaltender Jenny Danko. Dunleavy raced past her defender on the wing and scored top shelf to put the Panthers up 2-0, less than three minutes after the first draw.
SCAD then scored three quick goals to jump ahead with 24:39 remaining in the first half. Grenier answered with a goal of her own, igniting an 11-2 run for FIT, to head into halftime leading 13-5 over the Bees.
It was fairly even between the teams in the second half as everyone was battling the rising temperatures on the field. Gormley found Modica cutting through the defense for the first goal of the half. The teams exchanged the next three goals before the Panthers fired in four consecutive goals to push their lead to 19-7 with just over 12 minutes remaining. SCAD scored four of the final five goals.
Modica dominated in the center circle snagging 10 draw controls, half of her team’s total for the game. FIT collected more ground balls than SCAD, 30-19, and capitalized on its free possession attempts, scoring on 5-of-8 in the win.
The Panthers host No. 6 New Haven at 7 p.m. on Monday at Pirate Stadium. Live video, audio and stats will be available at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
