From FSCMocs.com YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Florida Southern used a four goal second quarter here Saturday afternoon to take a 6-1 halftime lead en route to earning a 10-3 victory over Young Harris in non-conference action the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium. With the win, the Moccasins improve to 1-1 on the season, while YHC fell to 0-3 on the season. It is the first 1-1 start for the Mocs since 2013 when they also opened the season 1-1. The Mocs offense was paced by a career-high four goal from sophomore midfielder Cody Gray (Riverview, Fla.). Gray scored FSC’s first goal of the game with 8:13 left in the opening quarter and closed the scoring with a goal with 8:51 left in the fourth quarter. In addition to four goals from Gray, junior attacker Cody Dyer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and freshman attacker Kyle Silverstein (Smithtown, N.Y.) each had two goals to pace the Moccasin attack. Gray opened the scoring with a man-up goal a little less than seven minutes into the game to give FSC a 1-0 lead. It marked the first lead of the season for the Mocs after trailing 3-0 in the opening four minutes of its season opening 12-6 loss last Sunday at home against 20th-ranked Queens. The Mountain Lions tied the game with a goal by Mitch McDole with 2:56 left in the first quarter. Dyer, though, would answer with a goal with 21 seconds left in the opening quarter to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead. In the second quarter, Silverstein got the scoring with his first collegiate goal with 8:59 remaining and Gray would follow a little over three minutes later with an unassisted goal to give the Mocs 4-1 lead. Silverstein added his second goal of the game 34 seconds later and freshman midfielder Nick Gutmann (Long Island, N.Y.) got into the scoring column on a goal with 35 seconds left in the period to give the Mocs a 6-1 halftime lead. YHC would snap a five-goal flurry by the Mocs on a goal by Matt Spadafora just two-plus minutes into the third quarter to drop FSC’s lead to 6-2. The Mocs would then use goals from Gray and Dyer to push its lead to 8-2 at the end of the third quarter. Both of those goals were unassisted. Sophomore midfielder Lucas Claude (Calgary, Alberta) scored his second goal of the season just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter to give the Mocs a 9-2 lead. The Mountain Lions would take advantage of a man-up situation with 13 minutes left in the game as he Connor Leies scored a man-up goal to drop the Mocs lead to 9-3. Gray, though, would cap the scoring his fourth goal of the game with 8:51 remaining. Junior goalie Matt Lalli (New Milford, Conn.) picked up 12 saves in the game and also had three ground balls and caused a turnover in nearly 53 minutes of action. Junior Cody Christie (Vernon Hills, Ill.) played a little over seven minutes in goal for the Mocs and recorded two saves and didn’t allow a goal in his first collegiate action. For the game, the Mocs outshot the Mountain Lions, 42-31 and also had five more shots on goal (22-17) in the win, including a combined 11 shots on goal from Gray (6) and Dyer (5). One area that Young Harris controlled was in the draw circle as they were 11-for-15 on face-offs for the game, while the Mocs went 4-for-15 on its face-off attempts. Both teams scored man-up goals in the game as the Mocs were 1-for-5 on man-up chances, while YHC was 1-for-8 on their man-up opportunities. Thanks to his four goals and one assist, Gray finished with five points, while Claude (1 goal, 2 assists) and Dyer (2 goals, 1 assist) each had three points for the Mocs. Dyer finished the game with 10 shots, while Gutmann had nine and Gray and Claude each had six shots on the day. Both teams each recorded 28 ground balls in the game as the Mocs got a team high four from junior long stick midfielder Scott Kirchner (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). YHC’s Zach Stephenson had five ground balls for Young Harris. Along with the goals scored by Leies, McDole and Spadafora, Bruce Silk had two assists in the loss. The Mocs caused 10 turnovers in the game as YHC had 24 turnovers for the game. FSC committed 16 turnovers as YHC caused eight of them. Mason King played all 60 minutes in goal for YHC and recorded 12 saves, while allowing 10 goals. FSC will now return home to begin an 11 game homestand on Friday, Feb. 19 as they host Walsh in a 7 p.m. game at Bryant Stadium.
