thanks to Travis Larner, Athletic Communications Assistant – Florida Southern College for the press release   CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A stout defensive effort and four goals from senior attackman Dane Sorensen allowed Florida Southern to overcome a first-quarter deficit to defeat Queens (N.C.), 10-6, on the road at the Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. The win is the second straight for the Moccasins, who improve to 5-7 on the season (1-2 SSC), while the Royals’ record falls even at 6-6 (5-1 SAC). Queens turned the ball over 21 times, seven caused by the Moccasin defense. Senior Trenell Boggans (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished with two forced turnovers and a team-high five ground balls. With the help of the defensemen in front of him, sophomore goalie Matt Lalli (New Milford, Conn.) earned his fourth win of the season. The 21 shots he faced and six goals he allowed were both season-lows. Lalli finished with eight saves. The Royals won all five faceoffs in the first quarter as they built a 3-1 lead. A on the game’s opening draw allowed Queens take the lead only 17 seconds into the game. The Royals jumped ahead 2-0 on the first of junior Garrett Chan’s team-best three goals at the 6:14 mark. Boggans stripped Queens midfielder Austin Oswinkle as he attempted to clear the ball from the defensive zone to set up Sorensen (Victoria, British Columbia) for his first goal at 3:23, cutting the lead in half. Freshman Joe Caridi (Holbrook, N.Y.) cashed in on FSC’s only extra-man opportunity. He set up the offensive attack with a caused turnover of his own before Queens midfielder Evan Farkas was assessed with a 30-second penalty for interference. Sophomore attackman Cody Dyer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) dished the ball to Caridi for the man-up score at 11:39 in the second quarter. With the Mocs trailing 4-2, Dyer found Colin Bayer on the doorstep of the crease and the freshman from Merrick, N.Y., beat Queens goalkeeper Eric Dolan high. The Mocs won the next two faceoffs, allowing Sorensen to score consecutive goals only 25 seconds apart, giving FSC its first lead of the game at 5-4 at 4:14 in the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Wright (Jamesville, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the third quarter with a rifle to the top far corner from the left wing, ending a 4-0 run that put the Mocs ahead 6-4. Royals junior Spencer Corkery made it a one-goal game at 6:32 in the third period, but Sorensen opened a run of three unanswered Moccasin goals, giving FSC an insurmountable lead. Senior midfielder Brendan Mykle-Winkler (Langley, British Columbia) and freshman Lucas Claude (Calgary, Alberta) added one goal each on the run. Junior Kyle McLaughlin (Woolwich Township, N.J.) added an unassisted score late in the fourth quarter. Sorensen’s four goals allowed the NCAA Division II’s active leading scorer to bring his career total to 171. He also leads Division II with 44 goals this season.
