Second half surge propels FIT past Young Harris, ends three game winless streak
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. (Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (5-5) powered through Young Harris College (8-4) on Saturday. The game was close at halftime, but a dominant second half allowed the Panthers to run away with the 20-8 victory over the Mountain Lions.
The win ended FIT’s three-game skid, dating back to its 18-4 loss to then No. 4 New Haven.
Sophomore Allie Modica paced FIT with a season-high in goals with seven along with two assists. Freshman Sara Grenier finished with four goals and three assists, while fellow freshman Caroline Dunleavy added four goals and one assist.
Young Harris hit the scoreboard first with a free possession goal by Taylor Lincoln just 40 seconds after the opening draw. Jaclyn Kernohan scored on a free possession attempt to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead. Florida Tech answered with two goals by Modica and Dunleavy less than 30 seconds apart to bring the game even.
Nicole Kernohan scored on a feed from her sister Jaclyn to give Young Harris the lead, but the Panthers responded again with two more goals from Modica and freshman Mary Gormley to take a 4-3 lead with 21:35 remaining in the first half.
The teams exchanged the next six goals to come to a score of 7-6 with 5:11left in the half. Sophomore Heather Roache scored with just over three minutes remaining to give FIT an 8-6 lead heading into halftime.
Florida Tech struck first in the second half with four consecutive goals, two by Grenier, to push its lead to 12-6 with 23 minutes remaining. Rachel Lepine scored off a pass from Lincoln to bring Young Harris’ deficit to five, but Modica answered 50 seconds later to give the Panthers a six goal lead.
Alexia Audet scored the Mountain Lions eighth and final goal of the game with 18:41 remaining and from there it was all about the Panthers. Senior Jenni Juliano scored off a great pass from Dunleavy to increase FIT’s lead to 14-8 before Modica fired in two straight goals to push it to an eight goal lead. Grenier and Modica teamed up for the next two goals for Florida Tech, and Dunleavy tallied the 19th and 20th goals to give the Panthers their first road win of their inaugural season.
This marked the third time this season that FIT has scored 20 goals in a game. In the Panthers’ five wins this season, the team is averaging 19.4 goals per contest.
Florida Tech’s defense was stellar against Young Harris, holding the Mountain Lions to a total of 14 shots and forcing them into 25 turnovers. The Panthers won the draw control battle 16-14, including five each by Gormley and Modica.
Head coach Corinne Desrosiers is excited for her team as it was able to overcome its recent winless streak.
“After a couple tight losses we really needed a win, especially heading into a tough April full of SSC games,” said Desrosiers. “We played a solid all-around game today as a team and I’m proud them. We took a lot of shots, which is something we’ve been talking about. Momentum brings confidence, and if a first-year team needs anything, its confidence. I’m looking for us to play just as well next week against Catawba.”
The Panthers are on the road again for their next game against Catawba at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 4 in Salisbury, North Carolina. Live coverage, if available, can be found at FloridaTechSports.com.
