FSC Women: Florida Southern Opens Road Trip By Downing Erskine 19-4

thanks to Travis Larner, Athletic Communications Assistant – Florida Southern College for this press release   DUE WEST, S.C. – The fourth-ranked Florida Southern women’s lacrosse team breezed past Erskine College Friday afternoon by a final score of 19-4 to open its two-game road trip in South Carolina. The win improved the Moccasins’ record to 13-2 on the season (1-0 SSC) while the Flying Fleet fell to 1-12. The 15-goal margin of victory was the largest of the season for the Mocs. Eleven different players scored at least one goal for the Mocs in the blowout victory, led by a game-high four from junior Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md.), tying her season high. Senior Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.) and freshman Cassidy Remmell (Ocean City, Md.) each recorded a hat trick while Asper added a pair of assists to finish with five points. Senior attack Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) led all scorers with six points off of one goal and five assists. FSC’s all-time leading point getter and the active assist leader in NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse moved up to fifth-place all-time in Division II with 195 career helpers. She needs six more to tie Dowling’s Brooke Witkowski for fourth-place all-time. The Mocs jumped ahead with seven unanswered goals to open the first half. Robertson only needed 32 seconds to score the first goal of the game. After one from senior Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.), Robertson scored two straight at 27:08 and 25:47 to complete her hat trick. She also netted the final goal of the first half to put FSC up 11-1 at the break. Erskine senior Samantha Burns scored the only goal of the first half for the Flying Fleet. Burns is now tied for second among all active players in Division II with 204 career goals after scoring three of the Flying Fleet’s four. Sophomore Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.) and Chase added goals in order to push the lead to 13-1 at 21:58 in the second half. Burns responded with a free position score at 19:01. In her first game of the season, FSC freshman Cayla Shawfield (Oviedo, Fla.) scored midway through the second half. She assisted Remmell on the Mocs’ next two goals and finished the game with four points. Hoover scored a man-down at 4:53 and Asper added a pair of unassisted tallies at 3:37 and 2:23 to bring the game to its final score. Redshirt freshman goalie Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.) needed only one save in 10:18 of action to earn her 11th victory of the season. Sophomore Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.) played the remainder of the first half and made a pair of saves. Freshman Paige Brodbeck (Millersville, Md.) also made her first appearance of the season and played the final 30 minutes in the net for the Mocs. The Mocs outshot the Flying Fleet 33-to-9 and dominated the draw 21-to-4. Erskine turned the ball over 24 times with 17 caused by the Mocs, including a game-high five from Hoover. Florida Southern will head to Gaffney, S.C. tomorrow, Saturday, April 4 to take on No. 11 Limestone (11-1) at 11 a.m. to close the road trip. The Mocs are 0-2 all-time against the Saints, losing both games by one goal.
