FSU Jumps to #20 in the MCLA Div 1 Coaches Poll

The 8-0 Seminoles, who were unranked in the preseason MCLA Coaches Top 25 Poll, have proved that the underdog can come out ahead with the right combination of coaching and talent. Their biggest win so far this season came at Texas State last weekend, where the unranked ‘Noles beat the undefeated Bobcats (then ranked #17) 9-7.
Coach Matt Doyle gives kudos to his veteran players, and complements the great recruiting job the previous coaching staff did with the freshmen. “Veteran players like Andrew Kiggen and Will Goodman make my job much easier”. Kiggen, a senior midfielder, is one of the team captains this year. Doyle says, “I like this kid. Besides being an outstanding two way middie, he’s tough as nails and a great leader”. Goodman, a junior attackman, is currently ranked 2nd in the SELC for PPG. “Will is a coach’s dream”, says Doyle. “This kid dodges garbage pails before practice- lines them up and runs in between them!”
Doyle preaches something else besides teamwork. “I talk about love a lot, which probably sounds very strange to an outsider”, he jokes. “Loving to play this game, loving to compete and loving your teammates.” Kiggen comments on this, “The one thing that stands out besides Coach Doyle’s incredible knowledge of the game is the fact that he pushes us to make each other better every day. It’s not about individual stats or awards. We are working together as a whole unit for one goal, one game at a time”. Goodman agrees saying, “From the first day Coach Doyle walked onto the field, he has preached family. I didn’t fully understand how a team could become a family until this year. We care more about the guy standing next to us than we do about ourselves. This is a rare thing and I truly believe this is why we have had so much success this year”.
FSU is on the road again this Saturday to take on the 2013 SELC champions, the Georgia Bulldogs. For more information on FSU lacrosse, visit www.fsulacrosse.com. For more information on the MCLA, visit www.mcla.us.
