FT Women: Panthers Host No. 9/10 Tars in Inaugural SSC Contest

FIT hopes to continue offensive melee in matchup with high-powered Rollins
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (6-5, 0-0 SSC) hosts national powerhouse Rollins College (9-3, 2-1 SSC) in what could be the Panthers toughest contest so far in their inaugural season. FIT’s first-ever Sunshine State Conference home opener is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium.
Florida Tech enters the matchup with Rollins fresh off a high scoring road battle against Catawba College on Saturday, April 4. The Panthers came away with a 19-17 victory over the Indians in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Freshman Sara Grenier tied a season-high scoring six goals in the win. Sophomore Allie Modica finished with five goals and a team-high five draw controls and freshman Caroline Dunleavy recorded her seventh hat trick of the season while dishing out one assist. Redshirt sophomore Arielle Gunderson added a game-high five caused turnovers and freshman Stephanie Stuart made 11 saves in goal for the Panthers.
FIT outshot Catawba 38-34 and won the ground ball battle 28-24. The Panthers were efficient in their free possession opportunities, converting 7-of-9 attempts.
As a team, Florida Tech ranks second in the nation with 29.45 ground balls per game and sixth with 11.82 caused turnovers per game. FIT features the ninth highest scoring offense in the country, averaging 15.27 goals per game.
Rollins College comes into the matchup ranked No. 9 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Division II Poll and No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division II Poll announced on Monday.
The Tars are coming off a home victory over the Saint Leo Lions on Friday, April 3. Rollins defeated Saint Leo 14-5. The Lions opened the scoring 23 seconds into the game, but the Tars rattled off seven straight goals en route to the blowout win.
Junior Tyler Thomas leads the Tars with 52 goals and six assists. Her 52 tallies are tops in the SSC and ranks second in Division II. Junior Kristina Coppolino is second on the team with 44 points on 24 goals and 20 assists.
