With state lacrosse ranking and perhaps pride on the line, Ponte Vedra High School welcomed the IMG Academy Ascenders from Bradenton to the Shark Tank Thursday night. Ponte Vedra came out blazing, scoring five unanswered goals… three of them by attackman Miles Silva, who was his team’s leading scorer with six for the night.The Sharks were super pumped, but the Ascenders also came to play hard and fast. Despite a number of penalties, IMG quickly closed the gap and led the game 10-7 at the half. The Ascenders struck first in the second half and led 14-8 when Silva scored again, bringing Sharks fans roaring back to life. PV midfielder Eric Applegate added to his impressive total of five goals in the game. Ponte Vedra’s defense also played well and second-half goalie Robert Martin made some nice saves. But IMG’s firepower proved too potent and they won the game 22-14. It was the Ascenders smallest margin of victory in their 6-0 season. Ponte Vedra’s record is 7-1 heading into Wednesday’s game against district rival Nease.
