Men’s Lacrosse Continues Home Swing Against Michigan
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a get-your-feet-wet start the last two-plus weeks, the Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team is about to see business pick up beginning Tuesday. The Dolphins, who picked up their first win a week ago Saturday against St. John’s, are sitting at 1-1 on the season and the two games were a prelude to the next stretch which will see JU play host three times in the next eight days. First up is Michigan which comes to town for a 7 p.m. game at D.B. Milne Field followed by a game Friday against Marquette and again Weds., March 11, against Robert Morris. The game versus Michigan and Robert Morris will be shown on ESPN3. Off to their best start in history, this is the fourth season for the Wolverines, Michigan arrives with a 3-1 record after playing all games indoors thus far. Their only loss came to second-ranked Notre Dame, 17-8. This isn’t the first time JU has seen Michigan as the Dolphins came away with a 9-8 overtime win in March of 2012, UM’s first season. “They’re a program that’s really on a fast rise,” JU coach Guy Van Arsdale said. “They’ve jumped in it with both feet. There is no holds barred to them getting better and they’ve done a great job. They’ve got a lot of fire power on the offensive end and we feel pretty sure their goal keeper might be the best goal keeper we see all year, period.” The goalie, redshirt sophomore Gerald Logan, has logged 215 of his team’s 240 minutes this season and already has 45 saves. “They play a great schedule in the Big 10 and they’re very talented with top-ranked recruiting classes the last couple of years which you would expect from a place like Michigan.” While three games in such a short period isn’t the greatest situation, Van Arsdale says it’s time for his team to get to playing more. “It’s not ideal but this time of year it’s also good to play,” he said. “We’re at a point where we’ve practiced quite a bit and probably need to get some game experience. Every time you play you get a little better as evidenced by our first two games. We were almost a completely different team from game one to game two which isn’t unheard of. The improvements generally aren’t as dramatic from games two to three or three to four, but they’re there.” The Dolphins were beaten 20-4 by Army in their first outing, The Moe’s Southwest Grille Lacrosse Classic, and then knocked of St. John’s 12-11 in overtime on a game-winner by junior midfielder Dakota Rohlin (Temecula, Calif.). Captain Austin Curtis said the upcoming stretch is hitting at the right time. “There’s good and bad to that,” the senior from Marcy, N.Y. said. “It’s fun but it will wear on people so you’ve got to keep in mind that preparation between the first game and second game and then second game to third game is going to be more difficult. It’s nice to ease into things then get going a little more. I think it’s helping us because we’re playing a lot better than we were at the beginning of the year so it’s definitely not a bad thing the way things are going.”
