JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team is dancing once again. With a 15-5 win over Detroit on Sunday the Dolphins claimed their third straight Atlantic Sun Championship Tournament title and will advance to the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive year.
The victory marks the fourth consecutive conference tournament title overall for Jacksonville which began the program in 2010.
Danielle Della Rocca set an Atlantic Sun Championship final game record with six goals while adding one assist. A-Sun Championship MVP Brittney Orashen meanwhile added four goals and two assists along with four draw controls. The duo was joined by fellow Jacksonville representatives Kristin Ridenour, Ashtyn Hiron and Asia Moore on the all-tournament team.
The Dolphins broke open a tightly contested game midway through the second half scoring three times in a four minute span. The burst was part of an 8-0 run by Jacksonville to end the game.
Jacksonville’s trademark quick strike offense led to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes after the opening draw as Hannah Wilcox and Orashen scored less than 30 seconds apart. Detroit’s Annie Mendoza countered with two scores of her own over the next six minutes to tie the game at 2-2.
The game turn into a defensive battle over the next several minutes with both goalies making several key saves. Both First Team All-Atlantic Sun during the year, Moore made 10 saves in goal for the Dolphins during the game while Lexie McCormick had an A-Sun Championship singe game high with 13 saves for Detroit.
Della Rocca regained the lead for Jacksonville at 18:37 before the Titians tied the game again on a free position goal at 9:22. After recording an A-Sun Championship single game record with nine total points in the semifinal win over Furman on Friday, Della Rocca, continued her stellar tournament assisting on one goal and scoring another on a spin move to give the Dolphins a 5-3 lead at the break.
Mendoza cut the lead back to 5-4 when the Titans capitalized on two Jacksonville penalties in the opening minute of the second half.
Della Rocca was there again for the answer and was followed by a score from Orashen 30 seconds later to push the margin back up to three with 25 minutes left to play. It was Della Rocca again then that started the 8-0 game ending run as she scored three times over the final 18 minutes.
Jacksonville owned a 15-5 advantage in draw controls, including a 9-0 edge in the first half.
