The Florida Launch, Major League Lacrosse’s only Florida team, announced today a trade with the Rochester Rattlers that brings in 2014 co-Tewaaraton winner Miles Thompson and a fourth round 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft pick. In exchange, the Rattlers receive face-off specialist Mike Poppleton and the rights to 2015 Collegiate Draft pick Kevin Rice, along with a sixth round 2016 MLL Supplemental Draft pick.
Thompson was drafted in the third round of the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft after having a successful collegiate career at University of Albany. He was recognized from the American East Conference every year he played graduating with conference Rookie of the Year, All-Conference First Team and Second Team honors. His senior campaign ended with him sharing the Tewaaraton Award, given to the best NCAA Division I college lacrosse player, with his brother, Lyle Thompson. He and his brother were the first Native Americans to be honored with college lacrosse’s top accolade. In his four years at Albany, Thompson played in 61 games and scored 189 goals and 104 assists for 293 points.
In his lone season with Rochester, Thompson had 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points. He has not played with the team this season as he has been with the Minnesota Swarm of the indoor National Lacrosse League where he has scored 26 goals and 33 assists for 59 points.
Thompson could shortly be joined in the MLL by his brother Lyle Thompson, who was drafted by the Florida Launch as the number one overall pick in the 2015 MLL Collegiate Draft. L. Thompson will be eligible to play in the MLL once his senior campaign with Albany comes to an end. The Thompson brothers combined for over 600 points in college, playing together from 2012-14.
Leaving the Launch after being sidelined with injuries in 2014, Poppleton has been a face-off specialist and sharing time at the X with Chris Mattes. He recorded one goal in three games with 11 groundballs and a 0.556 (20-36) face-off percentage, sixth best in the league.
Florida Launch fans will get their first chance to see Miles Thompson when the Launch hosts the Ohio Machine on May 9 at 7 PM. Fans can purchase tickets for the game atwww.floridalaunchlacrosse.com/tickets and can see in-game updates by following @Florida_Launch on Twitter and Instagram.
