Rochester, N.Y. – The Florida Launch took on the Rochester Rattlers on Sunday, May 3, falling 10-9 in overtime at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium. The Launch scored the final three goals of regulation to force overtime for the first time in franchise history.
Steven Brooks sparked the offense with a pair of goals and assists for his second-straight four-point game. Kieran McArdle also logged two goals with an assist for three points on the afternoon. Sam Snow recorded two goals for his first points with the Launch and set a career-record for most points and goals in a game.
On defense, Bobby Lawrence led the squad with six groundballs with Mike Poppleton posting five. In the goal, Brett Queener recorded 15 saves in regulation with three groundballs.
The Launch got on the scoreboard first after Brooks found Snow in the first three minutes of play. Rochester scored three-straight before Duncan Clancy received a pass from Brooks to cut the deficit to one and score his first ever MLL goal. The Rattlers created separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Launch 3-1 with Jordan Wolf playing a part in each of the home team’s points. McArdle recorded his first point of the game with an unassisted goal. And Queener kept the game close in the half with 10 saves and only let the Rattlers have a three-goal lead going into the half.
In the second half the Launch started to find its offensive groove, scoring the bulk of its goals in the final 30 minutes of play. After surrendering a Rochester goal, McArdle and Tucker Durkin scored back-to-back goals to make the score 7-5. Both sides exchanged goals to end the scoring in the third quarter and leave the Launch trailing 8-6.
Rochester scored early in the final quarter, adding a goal two minutes after the break to extend the lead to three. After five minutes of scoreless action, Snow found an opening and took it for his second goal of the afternoon. Brooks also scored his second goal in the final quarter, making it a one-point contest with five minutes left to play. With time starting to become a factor, McArdle found Kevin Cunningham for the equalizer goal to knot the score for the first time since the sixth minute of play. In the unknown territory of overtime action for the Launch, Jordan MacIntosh of the Rattlers scored quickly to conclude the afternoon.
The loss marks the first time the Launch have suffered defeat in the month of May, having escaped May of last season without a loss.
