via press release – photo via JU web site   JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  –  Ashtyn Hiron scored a career-best five goals and Mariah Cudlipp totaled 14 saves, but Jacksonville University (0-2) fell in a heartbreaker to #15 UMASS (1-2), 14-13, Sunday at D.B. Milne Field. First Half Cudlipp started in goal and made nine saves in the period. The Dolphins raced out to a 5-0 lead with goals from MacEllen McDonough from Rachel Aus, Courtney Valdez from Danielle Della Rocca, Amelia Pedwell from Lillie Miller, Aus, and Hiron all within the first 11 minutes. UMASS was held scoreless until the 17:01 mark on a Cassidy Doster shot that opened the Minutewomen scoring. Hiron’s free position score at 7:09 was the final JU goal, and UMASS beat the buzzer on a Callie Santos shot to conclude the half with a 6-5 Jacksonville lead. Second Half The second half scoring started when JU’s Miller converted a beautiful unassisted shot into the back of the net at 27:05. After a pair of Minutewomen scores, Hiron and Pedwell both scored unassisted within the 20-minute mark. UMASS would tie the game at nine with 15:11 remaining before Aus drilled in a shot at 14:17. The Minuetwomen then scored twice to grab the lead at 11-10 with 11:58 remaining on a Santos free position shot. Hiron scored her fourth goal at 10:50 on the clock to knot the game once more, but the Minuetwomen grabbed the lead for good with goals from Hannah Murphy and Holly Turner. Hiron’s fifth goal came off a free position at 3:20 to cut the Dolphin deficit to 13-12. Kaitlyn Cerasi’s insurance goal at 1:18 proved costly for the hosts as a last-second goal by Courtney Valdez wasn’t enough in the 14-13 loss to UMASS. They were outshot by UMASS, 32-24, and had 14 ground balls to the Minutewomen’s 19. Jacksonville continues its eight-game home stretch with a Feb. 27 matchup against the #3 Florida Gators. First draw is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
