Jupiter lacrosse coach Danny Loftus hears the same question over and over again when asked about his junior goalie.
“Is his real name Viper?”
Loftus is referring to 6-foot-1 left-handed goalie Drake Scheele. While his first name is actually Drake, on the lacrosse field, the junior goes by his middle name, Viper.
“It started in Pee-Wee football when there were two Drakes on the team,” says Scheele. “My mom was like, ‘Let’s go with Viper, so there’s no confusion.'”
On-the-field, opponents have come to know the name Viper all too well. For the past three years, Scheele has served as the anchor of the Warriors’ defense, making highlight-reel plays on a regular basis. Whether he’s making acrobatic saves or using his athleticism to dart past opposing attackmen and spark Jupiter’s transition game, it’s easy to see why Scheele has become one of the best goalies in the state.
“I truly believe he’s the best athlete I’ve coached,” said Loftus. “I think he’s the best athlete at Jupiter High School. I think he has the ability to step into any sport and be successful at it.”
For Scheele, his lacrosse career began in 4th grade when his older brother Brandon, now a sophomore midfielder at Huntingdon College (Al.), convinced him to play. A few years later, Scheele joined the local club program Blue Devil Elite and started working with Loftus, someone with a vast experience in net.
