Boys’ Latin (BL), the top ranked team in the nation, opened their season with a 14 to 11 win over Lake Highland Prep (LHP), the reigning Florida state champion yesterday on a warm Florida evening, Saturday March 15th at Saint Andrews.
The game started slowly with long possessions and solid defense. Boys’ Latin struck first at 10:34 in the first quarter. It remained 1-0 Boys Latin until 3:01 when Boys’ Latin scored again, and added another at 2:26. Leading 3-0 at this point it looked like a blowout by the favored Maryland powerhouse might be in the making. But LHP was not ready to give up. With two quick goals at 1:52 and 1:45, the Florida boys brought it back to 3-2 to end the first quarter.
The second quarter began with back and forth scoring, BL at 11:54, LHP at 11:46 and 11:15 to tie it up at 4-4 then BL at 9:29 and 6:24 to build a two goal lead. LHP narrowed it to one at 5:22, but BL extended the lead to three with goals at 4:55 and 4:14. Another exchange at 2:51 and 2:20 left BL’s lead at three. BL added another at 0:14 to take a four goal lead into halftime.
The third quarter was a defensive battle in which neither team managed to score, allowing BL to take their four goal lead into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter continued the defensive battle until 7:43, when LHP got back to within three. Then scoring broke open in the last six minutes of the game with BL scoring at 5:41, LHP at 4:06, BL at 3:06, LHP at 2:39, BL at 2:12 and 1:15 and finally LHP at 0:56 and 0:42 for the final score of 14 to 11 Boys Latin.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, March 18. LHP vs another Maryland powerhouse, McDonogh at Vero and Boys’ Latin faces the 2013 state runner up, Saint Andrews at Saint Andrews.

Editor’s Note from Senior Writer Lee Roggenburg:
First, John and Roger, thanks so much for this write-up and the photos provided! I was only able to watch the first half due to a prior obligation and I wanted to add a few words based on what I saw. Right now Boys’ Latin is the #1 rated team in America by Inside Lacrosse. Whether they keep that ranking or not time will tell. But something stuck out to me while watching the first half and I wanted to comment on it.
Lake Highland was able to compete. Not in just making a good showing but in really being able to play with Boys’ Latin in many ways.
With one exception. And until Florida kids internalize this they will continue to fall short of their top northern competition.
There is NO SUBSTITUTE for ball-handling skills. All the athleticism in the world can’t substitute for it. The one thing that BL’s kids were able to do that LHP couldn’t match was HOW FAST BL could:
A) Pass and B) Catch and shoot hard without winding up
Both of those skills can only be learned one way. With extra time on the wall. BL’s offense was just that much quicker when running their offense. Speed in those two areas means that not only do you get better quality looks but also that you can run your offense closer to the goal. BL did that, while LHP had to work harder to get into scoring positions.
Frankly that was the difference to me watching the game.
Not much else. Frankly, I think Adam Sawicki would start for Boy’s Latin this year based on what I saw. And plenty of LHP’s players could have made BL’s varsity squad. Florida kids are now at the point where they now need to take that last 10% step.
And that step is simple. Bring the stick skills up to that final level and you’ve truly arrived.
