Lake Mary High School and Seminole High School are 3.6 miles apart. The athletic rivalry between the two schools is intense and always well attended. This past Saturday was no different as both teams put on a fan’s dream in a back and forth contest that saw the Rams score five fourth quarter goals to complete a dramatic come from behind victory.
Lake Mary jumped out to a three goal advantage led by Kurt Sisco (2 goals) and Tyler Castillo (3 goals including the game winner). However, Seminole took advantage of some sloppy ball handling by Lake Mary and roared back to take a 4-3 first quarter lead. Seminole increased its advantage to 6-3 with 8 minutes to go in the half on a man up goal by Bennett Osterink. At this stage the Lake Mary defense made several adjustments and held the high powered Seminole offense to four goals for the remaining 32 minutes.
Charlie Ragault (2 goals) and Zac Gussman (3 goals) added scores for the Rams in the remaining time bringing the halftime score to 6-5 Seminole. The 3rd quarter featured a see saw battle that had Seminole push their lead to 2 on a goal by Peyton Rivers (2 goals) but then Alex Forehand brought the margin back to 1. Heath Rivers (2 goals) scored with :15 seconds left in the quarter providing an 8-6 advantage going into the final quarter.
Lake Mary did not panic and came out in the fourth quarter with a renewed effort as the rain increased as well in intensity. Sisco pulled the Rams within 1 with his second goal of the day. LSM Josh Williamson ignited the Noles by winning the ensuing face off by coming off the wing and going all the way to the goal to provide an 9-7 advantage at 8:58 of the quarter. The Lake Mary offense had trouble all day handling the wet conditions but found their sharpness at this stage with Gussman putting in two goals in a one minute span and tying the game for the first time since the first quarter. Ragault put the Rams up for the first time since halfway through the first quarter with a nice inside finish to bring a roar from the soaked crowd. The Rams had several opportunities to increase the lead to two but could not finish which set the stage for an amazing and chaotic last two minutes.
After an errant pass on man up by the Rams the Noles retained possession and Alex Proly drove the right alley and then rolled back to put in a left top shelve corner shot from fifteen yards at 1:48. The urgency of the situation, the rain, the crowd, the intensity of the players all came together to produce a sloppy but incredible one minute of action that saw both teams with possessions, turnovers, and bodies flying all over the field. Castillo brought an end to the chaos with a perfectly placed 12 yard upper right corner shot at :19 of the game. Both goalies were instrumental in their team’s success. Goalie Ben Roth of Seminole made several excellent saves in the first halve to provide spark to the Noles and Lake Mary goalie Chandler Harrison found his form in the 2nd half to help reverse the tide. Lake Mary clinched the regular season district title with the win but a rematch is certainly on the horizon in the district playoffs. Seminole moves onto Father Lopez and Dr. Phillips this week while Lake Mary goes on the road to county rival Oviedo and then makes a Saturday night trip to powerhouse Ponte Vedra.
