FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BOSTON (July 28th, 2015) – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league completed the regular season this past weekend with four Saturday night games. The seeding is now set for the 2015 Playoffs. The number one seed, New York Lizards, will take on the number four seed, Boston Cannons, with home field advantage. The number two seed, Ohio Machine, will play at home against the number three seed, Rochester Rattlers.
The Denver Outlaws took on the New York Lizards Saturday night and executed an exciting overtime win against the first seeded team in front of a large home crowd in Mile High City. With the 15-14 win over New York, the Outlaws were able to finish the year with a .500 record. Drew Snider scored the first goal of the night for Denver and then went on to score four more goals as the night went on, including the sudden-death game-winner 26 seconds into overtime. New York Lizards attackman, Tommy Palasek, had a hat-trick in the first half of the game, helping New York to enter the third quarter with a heavy lead of 11-6. Denver turned up the heated in the 4th quarters outscoring New York, 7-2, which led to the overtime opportunity and eventual victory. Two other Denver players joined Snider in having three-plus goals on the evening, John Grant Jr. (three goals, one assist) and Michael Bocklet (four goals, three assists). Michael Bocklet matched his career-high nine groundballs during the game, which then broke the franchise record for groundballs in a season at 80. Despite the prideful comeback win for Denver, this will be the first season in team history where the Outlaws will not compete in the Playoffs. Jesse Schwartzman, veteran goalie for the Outlaws, announced to the fans after the game that this would be his final game in Major League Lacrosse.
The final regular season match-up between the Boston Cannons and the Ohio Machine could be described as having the most significant consequence over the weekend given that both teams’ seeding status for the Playoffs depended on the outcome of that game (and also Rochester’s game). The Machine derailed Boston’s hopes of gaining the number two seed when Steele Stanwick scored the game-winner with a minute and a half left in the game. The final score was 17-16. The game was a thrilling back and forth battle to the very end, seeing goals from both teams’ key players throughout the night. Four players for Boston scored a pair of goals, Davey Emala, Kevin Buchanan, Max Seibald andJoe Nardella. Cannons attackman, John Glesener, lead Boston with eight points (five goals, one assist and two 2-pointers). Both teams took turns tying up the score throughout the night, but Ohio’s efforts proved the victor. Stanwick, who had the winning goal for Ohio, had eight points on the evening, (four goals, four assists). Marcus Holman andJimmy Bitter each scored three goals and Tom Schreiber scored four. With this win, Ohio get’s the opportunity to host its first playoff game next weekend against Rochester and they ride a three-game hot streak into the post season.
The Chesapeake Bayhawks and Charlotte Hounds put on an exhilarating showcase of talent on Saturday night in spite of the fact that neither team is heading into the off-season. The Bayhawks beat the Hounds 15-13 in their 2015 season finale. Joe Walters had a hand in four of his teammates’ goals and scored two of his own, giving him a seven-point evening (two goals, five assists). Both Ben Rubeor and Drew Westervelt had a productive last game of the season as well, each scoring five points. Rookie faceoff specialist for Chesapeake, Charlie Raffa, came up big in the win, making 19 of 29 faceoffs, picking up 8 groundballs and scoring his first career goal in the MLL. Joey Sankey, who has had a break out rookie season for the Charlotte Hounds, led his team with four goals in the loss. The efforts amongst the Hounds were spread across the board with seven players scoring at least two points, Mike Chanenchuk, Mike Sawyer, Garrett Thul, Terry Kimener, John Haus, Pat Laconi and Joe Cinosky. Chesapeake scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter, which solidified the win. The Chesapeake win was a fitting tribute to their Head Coach, Dave Cottle, who announced prior to the game that this would be his final game as Head Coach of the Bayhawks.
The Rattlers went to Florida with hopes of securing a potential playoff hosting duty and also a win in the last regular season game of the season, but the Launch had other plans. Florida defeated Rochester 18-11 on Saturday evening. Although Rochester took the first lead of the game, Florida got hot in the second quarter, scoring six consecutive goals going into the third quarter. Brothers Lyle Thompson and Miles Thompson had hat-tricks in Saturday’s win, with Lyle notching three assists as well. Kieran McArdle led the Launch with seven points (four goals, three assists). Tucker Durkin’s great defensive play against Rochester was largely credited for Florida’s win. Even though Jordan Macintoshhad a big game for Rochester, scoring five goals and making three assists, it was not enough to rally his team for the win. The Rattlers will get a chance to redeem this loss and possibly return to the MLL Championship game this weekend when they faceoff against the Ohio Machine in the MLL Playoffs.
