CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 14/13 Georgetown University men’s lacrosse team (8-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) rushed out to an early three-goal lead, but could not recover from a seven-goal Virginia run between the second and third quarter, as they fell to the No. 9/10 Cavaliers (9-4, 0-4 ACC), 12-9, on Senior Day at Klockner Stadium.
Senior attack Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) scored three goals to extend his consecutive games with a point streak to 24 and sophomore midfielder Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) scored a season-high three goals in the loss.
Freshman goalie Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) made 12 saves and allowed 12 goals against a Virginia team that outshot GU 34-24 after the first quarter.
The Hoyas proved the more energetic team in the first, forcing four turnovers and controlling the time of possession, while outshooting the Cavaliers, 11-6. GU took advantage on its second possession of the game, as freshman midfielder Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) found Lewis, who ripped a shot from the top center of the box below the goalie’s stick to take a 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Mitch Hugdahl (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) followed moments later after a UVA turnover with an unassisted goal to put the Hoyas in front by two.
