Maclay lacrosse rallied in the 4th quarter to down Oak-Hall (Gainesville) in boys lacrosse regional round 1. Going into the fourth quarter, Maclay trailed 8-6, but a hot streak by Chad Minter with faceoffs and Luke Langford and Stephen Chase on attack helped the Marauders to rally and take an 11-8 win.
The game started slow, with Maclay taking an early 1-0 lead on an Andrew Killinger alley dodge. Oak-Hall would reel off 3 in a row, including 2 by Tyler Baggett. The 2ndquarter would see back and forth action; Luke Langford would score 2 of his 6 on the night, with Garritt Schwarz contributing as well on a tight handle inside the crease. Oak-Hall would keep the pressure on though, responding each time, taking a 6-5 lead into half time.
The third quarter would slow down with Oak-Hall owning possession most of the period. A few clutch saves by both goalies, Austin Cook for Maclay and Miles Davis for Oak-Hall, would keep the scoring low. Oak-Hall used an EMO goal by Tyler Baggett to take an 8-5 lead. Maclay’s defense rose to the occasion several times, clearing the ball after saves and turnovers, but Maclay immediately turned the ball over on 3 consecutive possessions, limiting Maclay’s opportunities to put points on the board.
But, Maclay finally found their stride as Chad Minter began to dominate at the faceoff X, leading to several possessions for Maclay and high quality looks.
The fourth quarter would feature 2 goals by Stephen Chase, including one cross-over box style goal after a feed from up top by Garritt Schwarz. The Maclay defense would also force 2 turnovers in the quarter, the last coming from freshman Tripp Hunter to help seal the 11-8 win.
Luke Langford lead the way with 6 goals; Stephen chase added 2 goals, and Andrew Killinger, Jack Berg, and Garritt Schwarz each contributed 1 goal a piece. Lewis Langford and Garritt Schwarz each had 1 assist a piece. Chad minter won 15 of 20 faceoffs.
Tyler Baggett for Oak-Hall finished with 4 goals, while goalie Miles Davis finished with 17 stops.
Maclay advances to the regional semi-finals in a rematch with Jacksonville-Episcopal from a year ago (Maclay won a 15-14 thriller in OT). Maclay will host.
