Almost mirror images of each other, the Maclay School Marauders traveled Friday evening from the State Capital to the shores of the Jacksonville River to face off against the Episcopal Eagles in an FHSAA regional game. The picturesque setting was only enhanced by the enthusiastic crowd that was treated to a fantastic game! As the likeness with the schools involved would indicate a familiarity, these programs on the rise, due in part to Maclay “North Florida Coach of the Year” Mike Jones and established Episcopal coach Pat Harnett continue to feel each other out in this “would be” rivalry game.
Maclay Senior Trip Transou (Duke) initiated the scoring 3:54 into the game with a fantastic split dodge and bounce shot driving down the right alley. Episcopal sophomore Quinton Miller followed soon after by jabbing the ball in the net after a scrum in front of the Maclay goal. Florida All America Senior John Grube (Colorado College) from Episcopal put the Eagles up 2-1 on a fantastic solo dodge with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter. As the teams settled in Maclay had three consecutive possessions with shots as Episcopal goalie Dominick Johnigean made his presence known. After a time out RJ Raymond scored the first of his 4 goals and another quick goal by Matthew Stiefel, Episcopal took a 4-1 lead. With under a minute left in the 1st quarter Maclay Senior Carter Torgerson continued his playoff scoring barrage on a nifty feed from Sophomore Stephen Chase ending the quarter at 4-2 in favor of the Eagles.
As the 2nd quarter began Maclay seemed to have worked out the “bus legs” and quickly tied the score 4-4 with consecutive goals from Torgerson on an full field charge and assist from Sophomore Defenseman Teddy Transou and assist from Senior attackman Tucker Schwarz (Merrimack College) who was just getting started. After another battle at the faceoff X won by Transou, Schwarz drove the right side and quickly fed Sophomore Luke Langford for a top shelf goal when the slide came. Matthew Stiefel 2nd goal of the game came shortly after, tying the game at 5-5. After 2 brilliant assists Tucker Schwarz buried another feed from Stephen Chase putting the Marauders up 6-5. As the action continued to build Episcopal scored on consecutive possessions with goals by Grube and Quinton Miller putting the Eagles in front 7-6. Maclay followed with a man up goal by Schwarz assisted by Sophomore Jack Berg once again evening the score at 7-7. John Grube dominated the next two Episcopal possessions scoring 2 goals giving the Eagles a 9-7 half time lead.
The second half began with a tumultuous faceoff effort as Tripp Transou gained possession. Transou quickly moved the ball to Chase who drove into an early double and appropriately found Luke Langford on the back side who buried the ball top shelf closing the Episcopal lead to 9-8. RJ Raymond quickly found the net on the 2nd of his 4 goals when Stiefel found him back side making the score 10-8. On the ensuing faceoff off Transou drew the late slide and assisted on Tucker Schwarz 3rd goal closing the gap to 10-9 Episcopal. Working in tandem with Stiefe, John Grube showed his prowess ripping the next two goals increasing the Episcopal lead to 12-9 with 10:08 remaining in the 3rd. Maclay Goalie, Connor Lamba kept Maclay in the game with 3 tremendous saves previous to RJ Raymond taking a welcome assist from Senior Captain Attackman Scott Powell. RJ Raymond converted on 2 goals for Episcopal as Transou, Schwarz and Chase found the net bringing the 3rd quarter score to 14-12 Episcopal.
Continuing his dominate effort from the face off Trip Transou gained control and settled the ball as Maclay began the 4th quarter. As Maclay worked the ball Trip Transou took advantage of the slide and quickly passed to Stephen Chase who brought the score to 14-13. Both teams had opportunities throughout the 4th quarter as the fast play continued. With a 1:30 to go Stephen Chase once again found Torgerson on the crease for the tying goal at 14-14. The game ended with a barrage of shots from Maclay as Johnigean responded sending the game to Overtime.
Starting OT Episcopal took the faceoff and had a lengthy possession and came away empty handed as Connor Lamba stepped up big. On the ensuing possession for Maclay, Tucker Schwarz showed his senior leadership as he drove confidently down the right side and hit Carter Togerson who bounced a shot from the crease giving Maclay the Regional victory as the team rushed the field.
