Major League Lacrosse Announces Week 5 Player Of The Week Awards

MLL release their Week 5 accolades: “Coca-Cola Players of the Game”, “Warrior Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week” and “FOAthlete of the Week, Presented by The Faceoff Academy”

  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: BOSTON (May 12th, 2015– Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league completed Week 5 of its 2015 season this past weekend. There was a game on Friday and Saturday night, and two games on Sunday afternoon. Three of the four games this weekend ended in a score of 15-12. The Boston Cannons travelled to New York to take on the Lizards on Friday night, in hopes of redemption for the prior week’s loss at Gillette, and the chance to take down the only undefeated team in the league but were unable to capitalize on those plans. Three New York players had hat tricks in their 15-12 win over Boston, Jo-Jo Marasco, Rob Pannell and Tommy Palasek. Pannell had a five-point game with an added two assists. Despite the loss for the Cannons, the game was evenly matched, with Boston spending most of the game chasing a two and three goal deficits. Max Seibald had two goals verse his former Lizards team, one of which was a two pointer. Friday night’s game will be a memorable game for Paul Rabil, as he reached his 200th career goal mark during in his three-point effort against his former team. Greg Gurenlian bested the opposing team in face-off wins, yet again.  Boston will continue in pursuit for 100 wins as an organization next weekend against Rochester. The Ohio Machine, coming off a big win over Chesapeake the week prior, fell to the Florida Launch 15-12 on Saturdaynight at Florida. Peter Baum continued his hat trick streak to four games for the Machine. James Daily has begun a streak of his own, scoring his second hat trick of the season in his second game of the season for the Machine as well.  The win against Ohio marks the first win of the season for the Florida Launch. Florida’s attackman, Kieran McArdle, had an immense impact during the game, scoring seven points total, on five goals and two assists.  The Launch earned their first victory of 2015 without their starting goaltender, Brett Queener, but back-up Charlie Cipriano had a great game, saving 18 of 30 shots on goal and collecting six groundballs. In the third game of the weekend to end with a score of 15-12, the Denver Outlaws fell to the Rattlers in Rochester.  Anthony Kelly won his 500th face-off as an Outlaw, and is currently leading the league with 1,471 career face-off wins. Matt Bocklet also set a personal career record, picking up the 400th ground ball of his career. Matt Bocklet’s brother, Mike, also had a big game for Denver, scoring four goals and one assist. Rochester, with their third win on the season, are looking more and more like their former selves; a team that competed in the MLL Championship game last season. The Rattlers utilized two players at the face-off position, the recently returned John Ortolani and the recent trade addition Mike Poppleton, whom together, gave the Rattlers a 17 of 31 win percentage at the “X”. Rochester Attackman Jordan Wolf scored five points on the day, keeping him in place as the second highest point scorer in the league for 2015 with 22 points, sitting two points behind Paul Rabil.  John Galloway had another strong game in goal for his team, saving 11 out of 23 shots on goal. The Chesapeake Bayhawks got back on track Sunday, after tallying their first loss of the season last week against Ohio, they came out swinging against the Charlotte Hounds and won 14-10. Midfielder Jake Tripucka led the Hounds on offense with three points in the game.  Michael Ehrhardt, had a three-point game as well, with a two-point goal in the second quarter.  Tyler Fiorito, goalkeeper for the Bayhawks, had one of his best games to date; recording a career-high 22 saves against the Hounds.  Matt Mackrides scored a hat trick against Charlotte, making him the leading scorer on the Bayhawks, with 14 points thus far.  Both Matt Danowski and Peet Poillon scored four points during the game, helping to solidify Chesapeake’s third win of the season. In showcasing the huge role face-off men play in lacrosse, the Faceoff Academy will present a weekly award titled the “FOAthlete of the Week, Presented by The Faceoff Academy”. The award will feature the best face-off performance of the week based on winning percentage at the “X”. Here is our Week 5 MLL “FOAthlete of the Week, Presented by The Faceoff Academy”:   Greg Gurenlian, Midfielder of New York Lizards 23-for-30 at the “X”, with a 76% Face-off Win Percentage against Boston. This is Greg’s third “FOAthlete of the Week” award this season.    Week 5 Preview: This coming weekend, there will be three MLL match-ups on Saturday evening and one on Sunday. The undefeated New York Lizards will return home on Saturday May 16th at 5pm to take on the Chesapeake Bayhawks, who have the second best record in the league. The Florida Launch will go for two wins when they host the defending MLL Champion Denver Outlaws on Saturday at 7pm. Both the Charlotte Hounds and Ohio Machine are coming off losses from last week and will play one another on Saturday at 7pm.
