Men: #19 FIT Takes Down FSC 19-8 – Both Press Releases

(Men’s Lacrosse) – The good times keep on rolling for Florida Tech (6-4, 2-0 SSC) as the Panthers collected their fifth-straight victory, taking down Sunshine State Conference foe Florida Southern (6-5, 1-1 SSC) 19-8 Saturday night at Panther Stadium. FIT pulled away from the Moccasins in the second half thanks to a dominant performance that saw the Crimson & Gray outscore their opponent 11-3 over the final two quarters. Nick Wynne and Logan Sweeney led the melee with five goals apiece in the win. Carson Clough impressed with two goals and four assists, while Brett Pohlmeyer chipped in a pair of goals. Matt Weinstein ended with a goal and one assist. Tom Filipow guided the Panthers defensively with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Daniel Flock (6-4) earned the victory, registering 15 saves to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Florida Tech finished with a narrow edge in shots, 39-38, and ground balls, 22-20. The Panthers also controlled the face-offs in the game, winning 18-of-31 draws. FIT opened the scoring on goals by Sweeney and Wynne to take a 3-0 lead with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. Unassisted efforts by FSC’s Adam Utter and Liam Winwood decreased the Panthers’ edge to one heading into the second quarter. The attack line of Clough, Wynne and Cody Martin scored three of the first four goals of the second stanza to push FIT’s lead to 6-3 with 11:18 left in the first half. Tyler Kopen’s man-up goal cut FSC’s deficit to 6-4 but the Panthers responded with four of the next six scores to take a 9-5 lead at halftime. Florida Tech outscored the Mocs 7-1 in the third quarter, including three goals by Sweeney, and increased its advantage to 12-6. Consecutive goals by the Panthers to start the fourth quarter gave them a 14-6 edge with 11:26 remaining. FIT netted five more goals in the final frame, while allowing just two, and capped the scoring with Wynne’s team-leading 27th goal of the year as the Panthers improved to 2-0 in league play. The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, Apr. 8, traveling to Saint Leo for a SSC match up against the Lions at 1 p.m. ET at University Turf Stadium. The Moccasins (6-5, 1-1 SSC) dropped their first Sunshine State Conference contest of the year while the Panthers (6-4, 2-0) stayed atop the conference standings. HOW IT HAPPENED • Florida Tech seized the momentum early by scoring the first goal of the game with 12:43 to go in the first quarter. The Panthers would tack on two more goals before Florida Southern finally got on the board when Adam Utter scored at the 2:58 mark. • Liam Winwood was able to bring the Mocs within one (3-2) with his first goal of the day in the closing seconds of the first, but the Panthers scored within the first two minutes of the second quarter to push the lead back to two. • Winwood would score his second goal with 12:26 to go in the opening half to make it 4-3, but Florida Tech two-straight scores to make it 6-3. The Mocs got back within two on Tyler Kopen‘s man-up goal with 10:48 on the clock, but the Panthers outscored the Mocs 2-1 to close out the half and take an 8-5 lead into the locker room. • The Panthers pushed their lead to five goals (10-5) by scoring the first two goals of the second half. Kyle Silverstein found the back of the net with 6:41 to go in the third quarter, but it was all the closer Florida Southern would get as the Panthers scored the next four goals, and outscored the Mocs 7-2 in the fourth quarter, to seal the victory. • Florida Tech finished with a slight 39-38 edge in shots and made 15 saves to Florida Southern’s seven. The Panthers won 18-of-31 faceoffs, and Florida Southern finished just 1-for-6 in man-up opportunities. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Florida Southern fell to 4-2 all-time against Florida Tech, including 1-2 in road games. The Mocs also dropped to 4-2 on the road this season. • Winwood led the Mocs with three goals on five shots, and picked up an assist on Kopen’s goal in the second quarter. Silverstein finished with two goals, while Cody Dyer, Kopen and Utter each scored one. • Kevin Dyer picked up an assist on his older brother’s goal with 6:37 to go in the fourth quarter. It was the fourth time this season that the Dyer brothers have teamed up for a goal. Kevin has assisted on three of Cody’s 20 goals, while Cody has assisted on one of Kevin’s five goals this season. UP NEXT • Florida Southern returns home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to face No. 13 Tampa. The Mocs head to Rollins on April 15, before wrapping up the regular season at home against Lynn on April 22.
