LAKELAND – Only two days after rewriting program record books with a 28-3 win over Lees-McRae, Florida Southern suffered a 10-point loss to 11th-ranked Mercyhurst. The Lakers (2-2, 0-0 ECAC) defeated the Moccasins (2-6, 0-1 SSC) by a final score of 18-8 Thursday night at Bryant Stadium. Although the Mocs were able to score at will en route to tying the school record for goals in a single game vs. the Bobcats on Tuesday, they were only able to muster one goal in each of the first three quarters against the Lakers. On the other hand, Mercyhurst beat the FSC defense for six goals in the first and second quarters to race ahead 12-2 at the half. The Lakers scored 10 in a row from the 10:06 mark in the second quarter to 3:44 in the third to pull ahead by 14. Mercyhurst senior Trevor Vargo recorded a natural hat trick bridging the second the third quarters, and after a Kevin Vaughn goal, he netted his team-high fourth goal to close the run. Senior Dane Sorensen and sophomore Cody Dyer turned up the attack late as the duo combined to score six of the last eight goals in the game, beginning with Sorensen’s tally at 3:32 in the third quarter. The Victoria, British Columbia product opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with his second goal to cut the Laker lead to a dozen. Sorensen, who leads all active players across all three NCAA Divisions in goals scored, now has 154 goals in his career at FSC and is three points away from becoming the first Moc to score 200 career points. Dyer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) did all of his damage inside the final five minutes. He struck for back-to-back goals in a span of 44 seconds to make it 17-6 in favor of the visitors. Dyer then added another pair inside the last minute. The second-year attackman, coming off a career-best six goals and eight points against Lees-McRae, finished with five points to lead the Mocs. His six points per game is a team-best over their last three contests. Despite the loss, the Mocs finished with more shots (48-to-43), more ground balls (40-to-32) and more faceoff wins (18-to-12). Sophomore midfielder Andrew Fisher (Monkton, Md.) earned all 18 victories for FSC in the draw circle and scooped a game-high 10 ground balls. Florida Southern will make the one-hour drive to Winter Park, Fla., on Saturday, March 14 for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Tars in their second Sunshine State Conference tilt of the season.
