QUEENS, N.Y. – Dakota Rohlin posted his second-consecutive and fifth-career hat trick Thursday, leading Jacksonville to an 8-7 win at St. John’s at DaSilva Memorial Field. The Dolphins improve to 2-0 all-time against the Red Storm and 6-3 against current members of the Big East.
Jacksonville (2-1) ends a three-game road losing skid with the triumph.
Rohlin also tallied a hat trick, including the game-winner in overtime, in last season’s 12-11 win over the Red Storm. He scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 8:27 to play in Thursday’s affair.
“It was a really big team win for us,” Rohlin said. “After our last loss (to Monmouth), we had to move quickly with the turnaround, but it came down to us playing team ball today. Everyone had a better focus coming into this game, and we executed well today.”
St. John’s (0-2) cut the deficit to one with 2:39 to play after a Declan Swartwood goal which was assisted by Eric DeJohn, but the Dolphins’ defense stymied the Johnnies the rest of the way, as two Red Storm shots down the stretch failed to find the back of the cage. Jacksonville’s Chase York picked up a DeJohn turnover with 46 seconds to play to preserve the win.
“I thought the last two minutes were indicative of how we played today,” Jacksonville coach Guy Van Arsdale said. “We played great team defense. (Goalkeeper) Ben Gleichenhaus did a great job in the cage making saves today. All three of our defenseman – E.J. Thurmond , Ray Banister , Scott Cannon – played really well against a very good Red Storm attack unit.”
The Red Storm’s Jason DeBenedictis and Rohlin scored the first four goals of the match, with each player answering the other. Rohlin’s second goal Thursday, aided by Doran Graham , tied the affair with 5:33 left in the first period.
The first of two Fernando Milanes goals gave the Dolphins their first lead, 3-2, at the 2:29 mark of the quarter.
An Eric Applegate to Graham connection just 41 seconds into the second stanza increased Jacksonville’s edge to two. DeJohn and teammate James Bonanno countered with back-to-back scores, but an Applegate goal with six minutes on the clock put the Dolphins in front, 5-4, at intermission.
A Shawn Ewert to Jet Harding hookup only 18 seconds into the third quarter was later followed by Milanes’ second goal of the day to make the score 7-4. DeBenedictis and DeJohn each tallied a goal and assist on the next two Red Storm scores to cut their team’s deficit to one heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
The Dolphins’ Hunter Forbes had five ground balls, while York and Thurmond came up with four apiece.
Goalkeeper Michael O’Keeffe (0-1) recorded nine saves in defeat.
DeBenedictis finished with a hat trick and assist. DeJohn had two goals and as many assists. Thomas Stackpole and Jack McClellan each had an assist.
The Dolphins won 13-of-19 face offs and were 17-of-17 on clear attempts. Van Arsdale’s unit also picked up 34 ground balls compared to only 27 by the Red Storm.
