The Newsome Wolves hosted the Alonso Ravens for a Friday night match up in Lithia. The Region 2 District 16 Ravens are looking to recoup last year’s loss to the Region 2 District 14 Wolves on Alonso’s home turf. The game started with a Newsome draw control resulting in a turn over while the wolves attempted an offensive drive. Alonso’s captain Holliston Wagner (Division 1 commit for George Mason University) turned on the speed and through a defensive foul in the 8 meter wound up with a free position shot. Wagner surgically placed a high right corner goal getting the Raven’s on the board 1-0.
Newsome answered back with an onslaught of back to back goals from Maya Usher (Division 1 commit for Central Connecticut State University) and wolves captain Christine Olinger. The Newsome defense lead by Co-Captain Hannah Bradley (Division 2 commit for Lincoln Memorial) was able to shut down the Raven offense for the remainder of the time. The well-coordinated offense seemed unstoppable with numerous members of the Newsome wolves building a 14-1 lead at the half, but not without hard pressure from Alonso’s defense.
The second half revealed the Raven’s commitment to play hard as the defense slowed the Newsome drive. Alonso’s #11 Svea Kaller stood out as a key defensive player thwarting several offensive drives creating turn-overs. Holliston Wagner scored the only goal for Alonso.
