LAKELAND – Florida Southern’s eighth-ranked women’s lacrosse team completed the sweep of its Tuesday doubleheader by dominating Wilmington (Del.) in a 19-6 win in the nightcap at Bryant Stadium.
Ten different players scored and six finished with multiple goals for the Moccasins (4-1, 0-0 SSC), led by a season-high four goals from senior attacker Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and a hat trick from freshman Dovey Foote (Cambridge, Mass.).
Foote, who scored the first goals of her career in only her second appearance of the season, was one of many FSC freshmen who turned in a solid performance. Shannon Mazza (Kings Park, N.Y.) recorded the first multi-goal game of her rookie season, while Shannon Gilfedder (Longwood, Fla.) and Ellie Schmidt (Collegeville, Pa.) netted their first collegiate goals.
Head coach Kara Reber was able to give the reserves significant playing time in the lopsided win, and was happy to see her young players perform well.
“I definitely was glad that we had the opportunity to get everybody in the game and see how a lot of our freshmen could play in a college game,” Reber said. “They get to play against our starters every day in practice, and it was really good to see them step up and see that they can handle the pressure of the game.
“Dovey had a great game,” Reber added. “She’s been a really good cutter for us in practice, and she definitely showed that she can cut and finish. I thought that Sarah Rheinsmith (Virginia Beach, Va.) did a really good job back on the defensive end pressuring her attacker as well.”
Redshirt freshman goalie Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.), who entered Tuesday with less than seven minutes of playing time, made nine saves to improve to 2-0 following her first career start. She also earned the win in Game 1 of the doubleheader with a standout second-half against Regis (Colo.).
“Ashley has been having a couple of good weeks in practice and in this morning’s game we were able to give her the opportunity to show what she can do,” Reber said. “She stepped up this morning so we gave her the start this evening and thought she did a great job.”
The Mocs outshot the Wildcats (1-2, 0-0 CACC) 38-to-18 overall and 26-to-6 in the first half as they roared ahead 10-0. Chase earned a point on the first four goals and five of the first six. She opened the game with her first of a season-high four goals only 15 seconds into the first half. After dishing the ball to fellow senior Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.) for FSC’s second goal, Chase added back-to-back tallies. Her last goal put the Mocs ahead 6-0 at 19:26.
A pair of forced turnovers led the next two Moccasin goals. Wilmington goalkeeper Corinne Dries carried the ball to the left wing, where she was fouled by FSC freshman Emily Santoli (Fort Salonga, N.Y.). Cassidy Remmell (Ocean City, Md.) intercepted Dries as she attended to pass the ball across the field, giving the freshman attacker an open net and an easy score.
The Wildcats failed their following clear attempt as well when Schmidt stripped Wilmington’s Paulana Gabbert and went the distance for the unassisted tally, putting the Mocs up by eight.
After being held scoreless for the first 26:13, Wilmington scored three straight to cut the deficit to seven, but the Mocs added two in the last 1:05 to extend the lead back to nine goals at halftime.
FSC went on to outscore the Wildcats 7-3 in the second half. Santoli scored two of the last three goals to bring her total to 12 in the last three games. On the season, the fab freshman is second on the team with 14 goals and tied for third with 18 points.
Wilmington midfielder Rebekah McCurry-Larson stood out for the otherwise lackluster Wildcats. She finished with two points, six ground balls, four draw controls and caused a trio of turnovers.
Defensively, the Mocs caused 13 turnovers as the Wildcats coughed the ball up 22 times. Junior defender Gabby Barowski (Alexandria, Va.), the defending Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, forced a pair of turnovers to go along with a career-high four from Game 1.
No. 8 Florida Southern will continue its season-opening 10-game homestand with another doubleheader on Saturday, March 7. The Mocs host Mount Olive at 11 a.m. and Wheeling Jesuit at 7 p.m. at Bryant Stadium.
