thanks to Travis Larner, Athletic Communications Assistant – Florida Southern College   LAKELAND – In its third top-20 matchup of the young season, No. 8 Florida Southern earned a 20-13 win over No. 16 Regis (Colo.) in the early tilt of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Bryant Stadium. It marked the first 20-goal game of the season for the Moccasins (3-1, 0-0 SSC), who average 17.00 goals per game through the first four contests of 2015. They netted at least 20 goals six times last season. Despite the victory and a five-goal performance from freshman midfielder Emily Santoli (Fort Salonga, N.Y.), four goals from senior All-American Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.), and hat tricks from both Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and Allie Kryjak (Potomac, Md.), head coach Kara Reber was critical of her team’s performance. “Obviously, I think having three wins under our belt is certainly good,” Reber said. “These early games are helping us to realize where we need to improve. I just think today we struggled with the basics: passing, catching and ground balls. I certainly would have liked to have seen a better overall game from our team. “I told the team that I know we can get it done offensively, but we just force things. The fact that we had 22 turnovers in a game like this is completely unacceptable. Goals will come, we just have to take our time and create the good looks that we want. They should come easy, we shouldn’t have to work like we did.” The Mocs were off to a solid start, jumping ahead 4-0 in the first 4:06. It only took Kryjak 17 seconds to find the back of the net on FSC’s first possession. Starting goalkeeper Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.) denied Regis junior Maribel Gallegos on the Rangers’ first possession off the ensuing draw control, and 39 seconds later, Chase rolled from behind the cage to double the lead to 2-0. Santoli and Asper added goals to take the 4-0 advantage, but the Rangers responded after Regis (1-2, 0-0 RMAC) head coach Sarah Kellner called a timeout to regroup her squad. The Rangers quickly drew the game even with four unanswered of their own in a span of 2:47. Regis freshman Jada Bonner stole the ball from Santoli and carried it all the way into the attacking zone, dodging through a herd of defenders, and dished it off to junior Erin Todd, who scored unassisted to begin the Rangers’ rally. Although the Mocs would take a 9-4 lead with five straight, the Rangers, led by senior Emily Behr, would cut the cushion to two before halftime. Behr netted back-to-back scores to make it 9-6 with under nine minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Katie Coleman flashed her speed as she raced coast-to-coast, dumping the ball off to a wide-open Sarah Lugo on the doorstep of the crease to make it 10-7. Behr completed her first-half hat trick with 35 seconds to go before halftime, and the Mocs led 12-10. A goalie change after the break sparked an improved effort by the FSC defense. Redshirt freshman Ashley Seborowski, who played nearly seven minutes in her collegiate debut in the blowout win over Gannon on Sunday, replaced Gillis between the pipes and turned in 30 minutes of solid goaltending. The Annapolis, Md., native recorded eight saves for a 72.7 save percentage while surrendering only three goals to earn her first win. “I thought the fact that our defense gave up 10 goals in the first half was unacceptable, and I wasn’t happy with the defensive unit as a whole, not just Taylor,” Reber said. “We gave Ashley the opportunity to prove what she can do back there, and I thought she played fantastic.” The Mocs scored four straight in only 1:36 to take their largest lead of the game at 16-10. Lugo made it a four-goal game, 16-12, midway through the half as it appeared the Rangers would rally, but the Mocs sealed the win with four of the last five. Santoli deposited the last two Moccasin goals, giving the fab freshman 10 in her last two games. “I think she’s a great player,” said Reber of Santoli. “She has a lot of talent, and she can even do more. We haven’t seen her at the top of her game yet. She has certainly done a great job in the last two games, but there’s definitely a lot coming from that girl.” Behr led the Rangers with four goals and six points, and Lugo finished with three goals and one assist. Starting Regis goalkeeper Gianna Lombardi was tagged with the loss after allowing 16 goals in 35:59. Florida Southern will return to Bryant Stadium for the nightcap of the Tuesday doubleheader against the Wildcats (1-1) from Wilmington (Del.) at 7 p.m.
