Playoff Preview – St. Thomas Aquinas Hosts Cypress Bay

Cypress Bay was one of the nicer surprises of this region this season. Coach Geoff Swinerton came into the season with high hopes but suffered a lot of injuries to top players and was forced to go deep into his bench. His kids responded and Cypress Bay has compiled a 15-3 record so far this season, including a win over fellow playoff participant Pine Crest (a game I covered) and a one-goal loss to Spanish River.
Their reward for this nice run?
A first round matchup with the hottest team in the state, STA.
STA has completely turned their season around. With the return of injured attackers RJ Curtin and Dillon LaGamma and the emergence of Louie Yovino to help the terrific midfield of Revin Koss, Alex Tuminello and Alec Cumella this team is firing on all cylinders right now. STA has become a trendy pick for surprising the state and going very far so Cypress Bay will have their hands full.
Cypress Bay is led on offense by Ryan Morris and Kristopher Sanchez, goalie Tyler LoPorto impressed against PC and one of the better kept secrets in Florida in sophomore LSM Anthony Courcelie, a kid that will be well received on the summer circuit this year.
Cypress Bay is on the right track as a program but they drew the short straw this playoff season and I look for STA to move on to a likely showdown with Columbus Catholic in the Sweet 16, and a serious run potentially beyond that too.
