Reid Smith scored five goals and had two assists as host Ponte Vedra welcomed Fleming Island to District 8 with a 16-7 beatdown of the Golden Eagles Wednesday night.
Smith did much of his damage from behind the goal. In the first quarter, he approached the side of the goal, faked a pass to the middle that turned Fleming Island’s Micah Trent around, leaving Smith an easy path to the crease where he beat goalie Ryan Kelly to tie the game 3-3. Smith punctuated his night in the third quarter with a head and hip fake that caused his defender to move in the wrong direction, allowing the junior to curl around the goal unfettered and sneak the ball past Jason Kunath, who played the second half In goal for the Golden Eagles. Smith also had two assists.
Ponte Vedra trailed 3-2 halfway through the first quarter before unleashing a Sharknado on their visitors. Aided by three man-up opportunities, the hosts reeled off six consecutive goals between the 5:05 mark of the first quarter and the ten minute mark of the second stanza to seize control. The Sharks converted all three of their man-up opportunities during the run.
“Ponte Vedra has probably the most effective man-up offense in the state,” said Fleming Island coach John Hawley. “The penalties were a momentum changer.”
The Sharks tightly pressured Fleming Island ball handlers, making each clear an adventure for the Golden Eagles. Fleming Island trailed 12-4 at halftime, and was not able to reduce the deficit in the second half.
Sharks attack Matthew Keeler had three goals and two assists. Junior middie Andrew O’Dare won 15 of 22 face offs to tilt the balance in Ponte Vedra’s favor and added two goals and an assist. The Sharks, unbeaten in five games, travel to Tallahassee Friday where they will face Maclay.
Jack Hawley and Patrick Schreiber had two goals apiece to lead Fleming Island. Kelly had 11 saves while playing only the first two quarters. The Golden Eagles, now 2-3, play their first home game of the season Monday against Jacksonville Lee.
