It took Ponte Vedra nearly a quarter to warm up on a bitter cold night at Creekside High School, but the Sharks finally got control of the ball and beat their District 6 rival 12-2. As the first period was winding down, attackman Reid Smith snuck up from behind the net and got the first goal of the night. By halftime, the Sharks led 5-0. Terrific defensive play helped Ponte Vedra maintain their lead despite nine penalties on the night. With two men down during the third quarter, Creekside still couldn’t capitalize as goalie Colin Peaks saved a great shot. Overall, the Knight’s defense, including their goalie Graham Gaver, looked strong. Most of their offensive action came in the final period from midfielders. Weston Scott and Ben Wiegle each scored a goal for Creekside, and Julian Bonilla scooped up six ground balls and was a tank on the field. Miles Silva, playing attack, scored five of Ponte Vedra’s 12 goals. Sophomore middie Clay Welch had a fantastic night at face-off and also got a hat trick (3 goals.) The Sharks’ team ball went to defensive player Greg Celini who helped Ponte Vedra to a 6-0 record. On Tuesday Ponte Vedra hosts Bartram Trail, another district rival. Creekside plays Tuesday at St. Augustine.
