(March 10, 2016) – Rollins junior attackman Jack Vonarb scored a game high four goals and added an assist, but the Rollins men’s lacrosse team found themselves edged by 19th-ranked Belmont Abbey College by a score of 13-10 on Thursday evening at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field. The loss drops the Tars, who received votes on the latest USILA/Nike DII Coaches Poll, to a mark of 4-2, while the nationally-ranked Crusaders advance their record to 5-1 on the season. Rollins’ only two losses of the season have been to nationally-ranked teams, with their previous loss coming at the hands of then No. 12 Mount Olive back on February 14. Behind Vonarb’s five-point performance, Carson Buell tallied two goals, and Justin Diamond earned two points with a goal and one assist on the afternoon. Clay Phillips, Morgan Baker, and Dalton LeMaster each scored one goal to round out the Tars’ scoring efforts. Alex Petsos won 100 percent of his faceoff attempts, going 8-for-8 and picking up a team high six ground balls. In goal for the Tars, Jake Hogan saw a total of 38:41 minutes between the pipes, earning five saves while allowing 11 goals for a .313 save percentage. William Doyle closed out the final 21:19 minutes, earning one save while allowing two goals and posting a .333 save percentage. Their counterpart for Belmont Abbey, Harley Witham, played a full 60 minutes in cage, allowing 10 goals and making seven saves while earning a .412 save percentage. The Crusaders were led by Connor Sellars and Adam Wiedemann, who each tallied a hat trick on the day. Wiedemann added three assists for six points overall, followed by Sellars with two assists for five points. Callum Tanner netted two goal and two assists, while Kyle McGinley, Brendan McGovern, and Jason Hollister each scored once. Defensively, Anthony Cesario led the game with three caused turnovers, while Cody Agrella earned a team high five ground balls. Belmont Abbey opened up to a 3-0 lead with 5:23 to go in the first quarter, but a goal by Phillips at the 1:38 mark put the Tars on the board. A late goal with three ticks on the clock by Wiedemann gave the Crusaders a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Tars opened up the second stanza with two straight to pull to within one, 4-3, with 9:05 before the half. Belmont Abbey answered with two goals of their own to extend the lead back out to three, 6-3, and both teams traded blows to close out the second quarter with the Crusaders holding onto a 7-4 advantage. The third quarter saw BAC tack on two more to extend their lead to five, 9-4, but Vonarb broke the streak with a goal at the 12:03 mark to set the score at 9-5. The Crusaders outscored the Tars 2-1 in the remaining minutes of the third quarter, and Rollins found themselves trailing by five entering into the final quarter, 11-6. Vonarb got the Tars fired up to begin the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal at the 13:27 mark to pull the Tars to within four, 11-7, and Baker followed suit with an unassisted tally at the 8:41 mark to whittle away at the Tars’ deficit with a score of 11-8. Belmont Abbey tallied two straight to extend their lead to five once again, 13-5, with 4:28 to go, but the Tars were not about to back down. Diamond found the back of the net at the 3:27 mark, followed by Buell with a late goal with just 30 seconds to go in the game. Despite the Tars’ best efforts in their fourth quarter comeback push, Rollins was unable to break past a stalwart Belmont Abbey defense, closing out the game with a final score of 13-10 in favor of the Crusaders. The Tars led the shot count, 39-31, but Belmont Abbey had the slight edge in ground balls, 24-23. The Tars won 14-of-24 total faceoff attempts, and were perfect on their clear attempts, finding success on 15-of-15 attempts while the Crusaders were successful on 16-of-22 attempts. The Rollins men’s lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, March 12, when they play their third game in five days and host Wingate University at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field. Game time is slated for 10 a.m. Fans who are unable to make it to the game will be able to follow all of the action live on the Geico Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
