Rollins’ Thomas Earns SSC Offensive POW Honors

Senior Attacker Earns Weekly Accolade for Second Time This Season From Rollinssports.com MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 14, 2016) – Senior attacker Tyler Thomas has earned Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, conference officials announced, Monday. Thomas earns the nod after leading the Tars in goals and points scored, helping Rollins to victories over then-No. 14 Queens (NC.) and Slippery Rock University last week. The Winter Park, Fla. native scored two goals as the Tars took down nationally-ranked Queens (NC), 12-5, adding one draw control to her night as she fired off five shots and three shots on goal while going 1-for-1 from the free position mark. Against Slippery Rock, Thomas led the game with six goals while firing off 13 shots, nine on goal, and scored on 5-of-9 free position shots. Thomas helped the Tars defeat Slippery Rock by a final score of 17-6, and added one ground ball and two draw controls to her night. During the Tars’ two games last week, Thomas became the all-time program leader in goals and points scored. Rollins has stayed perfect on the season so far, racking up an overall record of 6-0. Joining Thomas on this week’s awards is Taylor Gillis from Florida Southern. Gillis repeats as this week’s SSC Defensive Player of the Week after guiding the Moccasins to victories over Indiana (Pa.) and No. 10 Limestone. The junior goalie faced 18 shots, saving 10, as the Moccasins defeated Indiana (Pa.), 16-8. The Bel Air, Maryland native saw 14 shots and saved six of them as Florida Southern got the 9-8 upset victory over No. 10 Limestone. Gillis was between the pipes for all 60 minutes in both games, helping the Mocs extend their record to 5-2 on the season. The Tars return to action on Thursday, March 17, when they travel to Hickory, N.C. to play Lenior-Rhyne.
