via press release – photo via Saint Leo’s web site   SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team and head coach Brad Jorgensen announce the 2017 team captains in seniors  Jake Kavanagh, Josh Kaufling, Chris Burke, and junior Jake Gilmour. A 5-foot-10 middie out of Shoreham, N.Y., Jake Kavanagh has seen action in 42 career games for the Green and Gold. Out of the midfield, he has scored five career goals and picked up 51 career ground balls. He also has won 73 of 113 face-offs in his career. “Jake has been one of the hardest working players on this team since he arrived on campus,” Jorgensen stated of his defensive middie. “His work ethic and attention to detail have given him a strong voice in our locker room.” A native of Arvada, Colo., Josh Kaufling has seen action in 38 games in his first three seasons. The 5-foot-9 middie has scored eight career goals and added three assists. In his junior season, he made his first three career starts. “Josh is the ultimate ‘team-first’ player who helps us in all facets of the game,” Jorgensen commented. “His versatility and willingness to put the team’s goals ahead of all else have been a constant during his time as a Lion.” While he did not take the standard route to college lacrosse, Virginia Beach, Va., native, Chris Burke brings a lifetime of knowledge and experience to the Lions. A Lance Corporal of United States Marine Corps and a Purple Heart recipient, Burke came to Saint Leo following his service. Over the last few seasons, the 5-foot-8 defenseman has seen action in seven games, and has caused two turnovers and picked up four ground balls. “Chris has a unique view on the opportunities provided by being a student-athlete, and his dedication to our game and Saint Leo is tremendous,” said Jorgensen of his defensive captain. The Lions’ fourth captain is offensive standout Jake Gilmour. A native of Pickering, Ontario, Gilmour stands 6-foot-1 and has seen action in all 28 games the Lions have played since he has stepped on campus. In just two seasons, he has racked up 100 career points with 52 goals and 48 assists. He has added 38 ground balls and nine caused turnovers. Following his sophomore season, Gilmour was named All-Sunshine State Conference First Team after a season where he broke the Saint Leo single-season assists record (34) and assists per game record (2.43) and set the single-game assists record with eight against Lees-McRae. “Jake is an outstanding talent, and an even better human being,” Jorgensen said of his junior. “He genuinely enjoys the process of getting better, and helping everyone around him do the same.” Saint Leo will open its 2017 campaign on February 3 when it hosts LIU Post at 7 p.m. at the University Turf Stadium.
