
Saint Leo Upended by No. 2 LIU Post, 15-6

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Second-ranked LIU Post men’s lacrosse opened up an eight-goal lead before halftime over Saint Leo University and posted a 15-6 win over the Lions, Friday night at the St. Augustine School.
Freshman attackman Jake Gilmour paced Saint Leo (1-1) with three goals, including the Lions’ first goal of the game at the 4:10 mark of the opening quarter that answered three straight Pioneer scores.
Gilmour tacked on a second goal with 4:45 left in the opening half, and completed the hat trick eight seconds into the fourth quarter.
Freshman midfield Jay Calcagno charted a pair of goals for the Lions, both in the second half. Junior attackman Matt Weller scored a man-up goal with 7:47 remaining in the game to cap the scoring for Saint Leo.
Matt Bellando paced LIU Post (3-0) with six goals, matching a season-high for the Pioneers. Matt Beccaris and Connor Drost each tallied three goals for LIU Post, with Ryan Slane and Eddie Bisson finishing with two goals and one goal respectively.
The Pioneers tacked on an additional goal with one second remaining in the first quarter, extending their lead to 4-1 after Gilmour’s tally for the Lions. Bellando back-to-back goals to open the second quarter, and scored twice more in the frame to send LIU Post into the halftime intermission with a 10-2 lead.
After a pair of goals LIU Post goals by Drost and Bisson to start the third quarter, Calcagno answered for Saint Leo in the final minute of the period. Each team tallied three goals in the fourth quarter, with quick goals by Gilmour and Calcagno pulling the Lions to within seven, 12-5, with nearly 12 minutes to play. The Pioneers scored twice in the final minute to extend their lead, with both goals coming off the stick of Bellando.
Saint Leo goalie Dave Moore recorded 16 saves over his 60 minutes in the Lions’ goal. LIU Post goalies Adam Winne and James Doherty equally split duties in the Pioneer goal, with seven and two saves respectively.
Saint Leo returns home to open a five-game stretch, starting with a contest against Mount Olive on Wednesday, March 4, at the University Turf Stadium.
