From SainLeoLions.com SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team used an 8-0 run over the second and third quarters to come from behind and grab a home win over the Coker College Cobras, 13-8. The Lions dug themselves a hole as the Cobra opened up on a 5-1 advantage in the first period. Freshman Peter Bashar ignited the Saint Leo offense, coming up with his third and fourth career goal to give the Lions a boost and start the 8-0 run. Senior Dylan Yonts continued to show his offensive prowess, netting four goals, while sophomore Jake Gilmourled in points with five, scoring four goals and adding one assist. Senior keeper Dave Moore was solid in net, recording 10 saves, and all but two of the Cobras goals came from five or less yards from net. Brooks Long took a pass from behind the goal, sliding across the face of the net to sneak it passed Moore for the first goal of the game. Gilmour netted one for the Lions, but that was the only score the Lions would see in the period. Mike Martiello streaked in from the left side to net another for the Cobras. Moore made two great saves in the last minute while Coker was on the shot clock. With 40 seconds left in the quarter, Coker called a time out to set up their offense. The strategy worked as the Cobras netted another with 10 seconds left to play. | Coker 3-1 | 2Q | The second period picked up where the first left off as Coker opened with two goals in the first two minutes. Bashar scooped up a pass from Joe Donnian to net the goal that would start the Lions run. Yonts followed with his first score of the game, grabbing a pass from Anthony Visintin, and taking the jump shot over the defender. Five minutes later, Yonts netted his second on a fast break attempt. Bashar netted his second goal to give the Lions a 4-0 run to close the half. | 5-5 | 3Q | Just nine seconds into the second half, Gilmour netted his second as the Lions used a man-up situation to score. Chad Marino found Gilmour right off the opening face and the Lions got their first lead of the game, 6-5. Marino joined the attack, ripping one top cheddar, hitting the corner pocket. Yonts recorded his hat trick, scoring off a clear-attempt pass from Marino. Gilmour followed with his third goal, grabbing the pass from Visintin to complete the 8-0 run. The Cobras ended the run with a goal from Josh Smith, and followed it with Martiello’s second goal. Marino added his second of the game, ripping one in on a run toward the cage. The Cobras added one in the final 30 seconds to keep the game within distance. | Saint Leo 10-8 | 4Q | The Lions took advantage of another man up position as Gilmour snuck in his fourth goal after Matt Scharrfound him at the back door to force a one-on-one with the goalie. Yonts followed with his fourth, taking Gilmour’s assist and sliding it low past the keeper’s ankles. Scharr tallied another assists finding Zach Lysyk, who crushed one in for just his second goal of the season. | Saint Leo 13-8 | Points to Note Will Cothron won 18 of 22 face-offs, and he picked up 15 ground balls, one off his career-high.
